Scholarships & Aid

Milligan offers a full complement of need-based and merit-based scholarships, grants, and low-interest loans from federal, state, and institutional sources. Combined with state and federal aid, many students often pay no more than they would to attend a college with a lower advertised cost.

Milligan Aid

Automatic Consideration

Milligan offers generous merit and need-based aid. To be considered for the following automatic awards, students must be an incoming student who plans to enroll at Milligan in the current fall or spring semester. Students must complete the admission application and file a FAFSA. Federal Aid

If needed, loans can be a helpful way to finance your education. Student loans are an investment in your future — an investment that becomes more valuable over time. Many students find that they must supplement their savings with loans. Federal loans are financial aid that must be repaid, with interest.

  • The average Milligan loan debt at graduation in 2017 was $3,300 below the national average of $28,500 and less than $300/month payment
  • If you need to consider loans, remember that educational debt is not the same as commodity debt, which only depreciates in value. Your education will continue to earn you more money over the course of your life, not less.

Aid that does not have to be repaid

Federal Pell Grant
  • Annual awards currently range from $692 to $6,895 (subject to change, per Department of Education)
  • Need aid based on results of information submitted on the FAFSA.
  • Eligibility for Federal Pell Grant is determined by a formula consistently applied to all applicants which takes into account the cost of attending the institution and the student’s part or full-time status.
  • For more information, visit https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/grants/pell.
  • If eligible, your award amount will be included in your Financial Aid Offer from Milligan (the university starts issuing offers in December as we receive the results of your FAFSA…file ASAP!)
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
  • Grants range from $250 to $1,000 annually.
  • Available to students with exceptional financial need.
  • Priority is given to Pell Grant recipients.
  • For more info, visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/understand-aid-types/grants/fseog.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program
  • Up to $4,000 per year ($8,000 maximum for Graduate students) to students who intend to teach in a high-need field in a low-income elementary or secondary school.
  • In exchange for accepting this grant, the student must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field (defined in the law) in a low-income public or private elementary or secondary school for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing degree or withdrawing from the program.
  • If the student fails to comply with these requirements, the grant is converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan with interest accruing from the date each grant was disbursed.
  • For more info and qualifications, visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/teach-grant-program.

Aid that must be repaid

Federal Direct Stafford Loans: Subsidized (Need-Based)
  • The maximum loan is $3,500 for first-year students; $4,500 for second-year students; and $5,500 each subsequent year, up to $23,000 over a five-year period.
  • Loans that are subsidized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Interest is paid for you while you’re in school at least half-time and during a period of deferment (a postponement of loan payments).
  • The currently published interest rate for loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2023, and before July 1, 2024 is 5.50%.
  • For new student loan borrowers: These loans require Entrance Loan Counseling for all first time borrowers and Exit Loan Counseling for all borrowers who are graduating, not returning to Milligan, or have dropped below at least a half-time enrollment status.
Federal Direct Stafford Loan: Unsubsidized (Non Need-Based)
  • The base annual amount for Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is $3,500 for first year undergraduate students; $4,500 for second year undergraduate students; and $5,500 for third year and above undergraduate students.
  • In addition to the annual base loan amounts, there is an additional annual Unsubsidized Stafford Loan eligibility of $2,000 for undergraduate students.
  • This companion program differs from the regular Stafford Loan in that the government does not subsidize the interest.
  • The currently published interest rate for loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2023, and before July 1, 2024 is 5.50%.
  • Interest accrues for the full duration of the loan, although there are no prepayment penalties.
  • Available to all students.

For new student loan borrowers: These loans require Entrance Loan Counseling for all first time borrowers and Exit Loan Counseling for all borrowers who are graduating, not returning to Milligan, or have dropped below at least a half-time enrollment status.

Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) and Graduate Students (Non Need-Based)
  • A Federal Direct PLUS Loan is a credit-based loan for parents of undergraduate students and for graduate students. It must be repaid.
  • Graduate students may benefit from using the PLUS loan as opposed to an alternative loan because students may not qualify for an alternative loan based on credit history, or the interest rate may be higher than the 7.54% Direct PLUS Loan interest rate.
  • The currently published interest rate for loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2023, and before July 1, 2024 for Federal PLUS Parent or Graduate Loan is 8.05%.

For new student loan borrowers: The Graduate PLUS Loan requires Entrance Counseling for all first-time borrowers and Exit Loan Counseling for all borrowers who are graduating, not returning to Milligan, or who have dropped below at least half-time enrollment status. If you need assistance in determining the amount to borrow, please contact Student Financial Services.

Alternative Loans

After exhausting all other forms of financial aid, students may consider Alternative Loan programs as an additional source of funding. Alternative Loans are non-federal loans. They are credit-based loans that may be used as supplemental resources for paying for college. Students should exhaust all federal aid opportunities first. Interest rates for Alternative Loan programs are based on the student’s credit rating or the credit rating of the co-borrower. A co-borrower may be required, depending on the student’s credit history.

APPLYING

Apply for an Alternative Loan and complete all requested documents/processes with the lender of your choice. Milligan receives notification from your lender when the loan is approved.

An alphabetic listing of lenders that Milligan University students have utilized over the last 3 years is listed here. This list is in no way exclusive or exhaustive of all existing lenders. You have the right to select any lender you wish for an Alternative Loan. If your lender is not listed, please contact the Student Financial Services Office for further instructions regarding the loan process.
