Milligan welcomes new students, parents during Connections orientation weekend

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (June 14, 2012) — This weekend, June 15-16, Milligan College will welcome approximately 100 new and prospective students and their families to campus for Connections.

Connections is a weekend orientation designed to make incoming students feel at home on Milligan’s campus before they arrive for classes this fall. It gives students an opportunity to tour the campus, meet professors and learn about life at Milligan. This is the second Connections weekend Milligan has hosted this year; the first orientation was in April.

For the first time in several years, Milligan also will host a Connections event for transfer students in order to target their specific needs and questions. About 20 transfer students have signed up for this afternoon session on Tuesday, June 19.

Gabe Rees, an incoming freshman from Redford, Mich., attended Milligan’s April Connections weekend. He met several professors and a few new friends during his time on campus.

“Connections gives you a vision for the next four years of your life,” said Rees, who will major in business administration. “You meet awesome people.”

During Connections, students get their Milligan ID cards, meet their mentors and roommates, select courses, and get their questions answered before classes begin in August.

“Over the years, we have seen a large decrease in the number of students who get cold feet during the summer,” said Tracy Brinn, Milligan’s director of enrollment management. “The Connections weekend assists in making the transition to Milligan smoother for both students and parents. A lot of the apprehension goes away and they are more comfortable when they come in August.”

Parents also are included in the orientation weekend. There is a parent question-and-answer session and an opportunity to gather important financial aid information. In addition to touring the campus with their students, parents are invited to a brunch where they meet members of the college’s parent council.

“The program’s purpose is to connect students and parents to Milligan,” Brinn said.

While many students are finalizing their college plans, others are still deciding or navigating the application process. Milligan still is accepting applications for the fall semester, and scholarships and financial aid are available, as well.

“Of course, the sooner you get your application in and are accepted, the more time you have to work through the details and feel prepared for fall,” Brinn said. “But our admissions counselors work with students throughout the summer, sometimes up until the week before school starts, to help incoming students.

“It’s not too late to begin your college dream this fall at Milligan.”
