Schmalzried to speak at Milligan commencement


Taylor and Wallace to receive Fide et Amore

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (December 7, 2007) — Nationally recognized childcare advocate and Milligan education professor Dr. Beverly Schmalzried will be the keynote speaker for Milligan College’s commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel.

The college’s December graduates include 13 bachelor of arts (B.A.), 26 bachelor of science (B.S.), eight master of business administration (M.B.A.), 30 master of education (M.Ed.), and 19 master of science in occupational therapy (MSOT) students.

As part of ceremony the college will honor Dave Taylor, director of food service, and Gary Wallace, Ph.D., professor of biology, with the Fide et Amore award in recognition of their faith, love and service to the college.

Prior to coming to Milligan in 2003, Schmalzried served for 23 years as the chief for Family Member Programs of the United States Air Force, where she directed the Air Force’s early childhood education programs serving more than 65,000 children around the world. During this time the Air Force’s 245 early childhood programs earned national accreditation.

Recent accomplishments include a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) for her career and accomplishments in early childhood education; national press regarding a study entitled, “We Can Do Better: NACCRRA’s Ranking of State Child Care Center Standards and Oversight,” for which she served as the principle author; and an appointment as a research fellow with Research Connections, a subsidiary of the National Center for Children in Poverty.

Schmalzried, who also serves as director of teacher certification at Milligan, holds a master’s degree from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.
