MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 24, 2009) — Milligan College’s Awards Convocation on Thursday, April 23, was a special day for many Milligan students who were honored for their accomplishments this past year. More than 60 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony.
Leslie Blowers, a senior from Elizabethton, Tenn., received the year’s most distinguished award, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award. Bowers also was named to the Milligan College Nursing Honor Society.
The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Awardrecipient is nominated by the faculty. The award is presented each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic record, and participation in college life.
Blowers will graduate May 9 with a degree in nursing.
Other local students receiving awards include:
Erin Aubrey of Elizabethton received the Women’s Chorale Award, and Kelly Sams of Jonesborough received The Ross Bader Concert Choir Award, which is presented each year to the person deemed to have made the greatest contribution to the musical and spiritual life of the Concert Choir. The recipient is selected by vote of the Concert Choir members.
B.J. Krug of Milligan College, Tenn., received the English Award. Krug, along with Matthew Roberts of Johnson City and Daniel Wallen of Kingsport, also was honored for his contributions to the theatre area.
The Spanish Award was presented to Rebekah Rollston of Johnson City.
Will Clark of Limestone was honored with The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Humane Learning.
Brandon Murphy of Johnson City was presented with the Legal Studies Award.
Seth Woods of Roan Mountain received the Society of Professional Journalists Scholarship. Andrew Green of Bristol, Va., received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Communication.
The Earl R. Stuckenbruck Award for Excellence in Greek was presented to Daniel Fultz of Milligan College, Tenn. Evan Wolfe of Elizabethton received The Standard Publishing Award for Outstanding Promise in Christian Education.
The Student Psychology Major of the Year Award was presented to Will Frye of Johnson City.
The Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Student Award was presented to Rachel Martin of Blountville. Kristen Jeffreys of Johnson City received The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Scientific Learning.
Benjamin Wade of Jonesborough received the Outstanding Senior Nursing Award. He also was named to the Milligan College Nursing Honor Society.
Along with Wade and Blowers, Hannah Oliver Devenney, Kristen Lates, Joshua Lovelace, Amber Schlonecker, Kasey Reaves Swatsell and Erin Testerman also were named to theMilligan College Nursing Honor Society.
The Undergraduate Student Teaching Award was presented to Jessica Bowman of Piney Flats. Jeremy Walker of Elizabethton and Rachel Tolbert of Talbott, Tenn., were presented with Master of Education Intern Awards. Tiffany Erwin of Unicoi was presented with theOutstanding Student Scholarship Award for Education. Katherine Duncan of Johnson City and Shayna McNutt of Kingsport were presented the Paul Clark Teacher Education Award, named in honor of the education area’s founding professor.

Chris Wells, a senior Bible/ministry major from Bel Air, MD, received the Dennis Bratton Leadership Award.
The Dennis Bratton Leadership Award is an award that recognizes a student for service in the community and on campus, excellence in Christian character, evidence of Christian service in a local church, and advocacy for change to improve society. The award was established by Hugh Jones and is named in honor of Dennis Bratton, senior minister at Christ’s Church in Jacksonville, Fla., and a member of the Milligan College Board of Trustees.
Kori Zick of Durand, Ill., received The Fine Arts Award, presented to a graduating senior majoring in fine arts. Along with excellence in the classroom, this award acknowledges students who have best exemplified what it means to be an artist.
The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Music, which is presented to the person deemed to have the most consistently exhibited excellence in music courses, ensembles and personal performance, was presented to Lydia Parker, a sophomore from Manteno, Ill. Kaity Aigner of Ferrum, Va., received the Orchestra Award.
The Performing and Visual Arts Outstanding Student Scholarship is awarded each year to a rising junior or senior fine arts major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who also has found significant ways to connect to the many facets of Milligan’s fine arts program. This year’s recipient was Melanie Jane Richards of Knoxville, Tenn.
Katie Purchase of Vero Beach, Fla., was recognized for her contributions to the Milligan College Theatre.
Alex Henderson of Ooltewah, Tenn., was presented with the Humanities Award.
The Johnson City Press Tom Hodge Journalism Scholarship was presented to Chelsea Farnam of San Antonio, Texas.
The French Award is presented on the basis of outstanding achievement, exemplary commitment and measurable progress in the acquisition of French language skills. This year’s recipient was Danielle Thomas of Frankfort, Ky. Thomas also was named the Sociology Major of the Year and received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Social Learning.
Eric Nauman of Mount Vernon, Ohio, received the Accounting Award. The Computer Information Systems Award was presented to Kristopher Cunigan of Lexington, N.C. Robert Johnston of McDonough, Ga., received the Business Administration Award. The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Business was presented to Jason Watts of High Point, N.C. Jeffrey Barnes of Franklin, Tenn., received the Wall Street Journal Awardand was recognized by Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors as the Outstanding Male Athlete.
The Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Award was presented to Jonathan Hawkins of Vero Beach, Fla. The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Biblical Learning was presented to J.D. Larson of Ashland, Wis.
The Service-Learning Student Award was presented to Jennifer Sheldon of Sevierville, Tenn.
The Lone L. Sisk Scientific Learning Award was presented to Joel Perry of Salem, Ore.Canadian Rosanna Couture was presented with the Outstanding Biology Student Awardand was recognized by the Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors as the Outstanding Female Athlete. Stephen Morse of Seminole, Fla., received the Outstanding Senior Chemistry Student Award. Kim Hogan of Springfield, Va., received the Outstanding Mathematics Student Award.
Jill Bourgeois of Churchville, Va., received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Nursing.
Lindsay Oltmann of Johnstown, Ohio, received the Human Performance and Exercise Science Award. She also was honored by the Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors as the Outstanding Academic Student . Nicole Moore of Meridian, Idaho, received theHuman Performance and Exercise Science Physical Education Award.
The Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Emily Schmitt of Avon, Ind.
The Student Leadership Award was presented to Kate Anderson of Greenwood, Ind. The award is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates servant leadership, virtuous character, active leadership responsibility and potential, and serves as a role model to other students.
Jessica Carter, director of campus activities, was recognized with the Student Appreciation Award . Senior communications major Adam Chapman of New Market, Tenn., was recognized with the SGA Distinguished Service Award.
Phi Alpha Theta Honor History Society, a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians, recognized the following students: Abigail Banks, Andrew Ford, Matthew Roberts and E.J. Swatsell.
Alpha Chi National Honor Society, whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and ideal character among undergraduate college students from all academic disciplines, recognized the following seniors: Kaity Aigner, Jeff Barnes, Leslie Blowers, Jessica Bowman, Jennifer Coe, Rosanna Couture, Katherine Duncan, Dan Fultz, Lauren Fultz, Robert Johnston, Demetrius Lattany, Joshua Lovelace, Kalee Nagel, Lyndsay Oltmann, Autumn Pruitt, Kelly Sams, Tyler Selby and Christina Spooner.
Alpha Chi also announced new inductees: Erin Aubrey, Irene Batchelder, Melissa Bledsoe, Greta Blosser, Jill Bourgeois, Will Clark, Katharine Fisher, Jennifer Galloway, Kristen Jeffreys, Tammy Millerm Tina Mowell, Cheree Osborne, Joel Perry, Danielle Thomas, Jeremy Walker and Anthony Wooley.
The following seniors were recognized by the Psi Chi Honor Society, a national honor society in psychology: Jillian Tenon, William Frye, Emily Needles, Emily Smith, Kaitlyn Aigner, Amanda Lizzio, Lindsey Wilmer, Cristin Patterson. Inductees include Timothy Hurtak, Katie Lindner, Garrett March, Allison Nauman and Matthew Tallman.
Sigma Alpha Pi is a national leadership and success organization designed and dedicated to providing leadership motivation to students. It was created to serve students by giving them the tools, information, support and motivation to be successful in reaching their personal goals. A select group of students, sophomores or higher with at least a 3.0 GPA, were invited to join the society: Christina Degen, Hannah Oliver, Jessica Li, Josie Dillon, Kara Patterson, Kathryn Huff, Kelly Sams, Manami Abe, Matthew Haas, Morgan Jones, Rachel Aue, Rebekah Gero, Stephanie Severns, Emily Eng, Hailey Williams, Laura Bowman and Meredith Lynch.
