Ethnic studies minor added at Milligan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN (Feb. 21, 2008) — A minor in Ethnic Studies was recently approved by the Milligan College Academic Committee and will be available beginning in Fall 2008.

All undergraduate students at Milligan are required to take at least one ethnic studies course for their general education requirements. The new minor provides an even more in-depth study for interested students. It requires six courses, or 18 credit-hours, from a list of more than 20 ethnic studies courses currently offered at the college.

The minor is interdisciplinary and students are encouraged to take courses from a variety of academic areas to broaden their knowledge and experience.

Current courses include an array of offerings, including African-American Literature, Cultural and Ethnic Geography, History of Islam, Seminar on Vietnam, Japanese Literature in Translation, Law and Globalization, World Music, Religions of the World, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Latin American Cultures, Race and Ethnic Relations, and a new course in Medieval Chinese History, amongst others.

Students may also receive additional credit for participating in an approved study-abroad program, including programs in China , Latin America, the Middle East, Russia and Uganda .

The minor was developed and recommended by the Ethnic Diversity Committee at Milligan. It complements other ethnic diversity initiatives on the Milligan campus and “supports and enhances the college’s commitment to offer a curriculum that values the distinctive contributions of all ethnicities.”

Milligan currently offers 27 academic majors and over 37 minors. Students are required to declare a major, but minors are optional and meant to further broaden a student’s educational experience and preparation.
