MILLIGAN UNIVERSITY, Tenn. (March 4, 2022) — Milligan University has awarded its most prestigious academic scholarship, the Jeanes Honors Scholarship, to incoming freshmen Alexandra Hayashi of Deer Park, Illinois, and Bryant Magness of Johnson City, Tennessee.

As the 2022 Jeanes Scholars, Magness and Hayashi are recognized for their outstanding academic ability, commitment to scholarly pursuits, sincere Christian faith and their service to others.

“Over the course of four years, the Jeanes Scholars lead as the face of Milligan’s Honors Program,” said Michael Blouin, Ph.D., co-director of Milligan’s Honors Program. “The Honors Program offers an intentional community for motivated students that are seeking to reach their highest potential. Members of this program challenge one another to excel both inside of the classroom and as servant-leaders on a world stage.”

Hayashi attends Classical Consortium Academy (CCA) in Barrington, Illinois, and has competitively swam for 10 years. She currently serves as a student leader in the honor cohort at CCA, and tutors others in Latin, math and writing. She is currently completing her senior thesis analyzing the NCAA athlete inclusion policy.

Hayashi plans to double major in biology and humanities while also competing on Milligan’s swim team. She is the daughter of Bradley and Deborah Hayashi.

“A liberal arts education, especially within a Christian community, is something I have always valued,” said Hayashi. “I fell in love with Milligan and I am excited for the opportunity to grow academically, spiritually and athletically.

Magness, a senior at Science Hill High School, is actively involved in various clubs and organizations. Currently he serves as captain of Science Hill’s debate team, vice president of the improv team and editor of The Hilltopper Herald. He was recognized as a Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities Scholar and a National Merit Commended Scholar.

His parents are Ethan and Betsy Magness, and he is the grandson of former Milligan professors Pat and Lee Magness.

Magness plans to double major in humanities and educational studies.

“I am incredibly excited to further my education on Milligan’s campus,” said Magness. “I am impressed by Milligan’s combination of the outstanding humanities program, wonderful Christian community and the personal learning experience.”

Named in memory of former president Donald Jeanes, the Jeanes Scholarships are full-tuition, merit-based academic awards that are part of the Milligan Honors Program. This scholarship provides an advanced opportunity for high-achieving students from all majors to deepen their intellectual scholarship, leadership and service.

Upcoming college freshmen who are interested in Milligan’s Honors Program and honors scholarships for fall 2023 must be admitted and submit the Honors Program application by December 1. For more information, visit milligan.edu/honors.
