Milligan artwork on display at Dos Gatos for First Friday, Feb. 1

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 24, 2018) — In February, the artwork of Milligan students will be on display in an exhibit, “Two Cats + a Herd of Buffalo,” at Dos Gatos Coffee Bar in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The show’s opening night and reception will coincide with downtown Johnson City’s First Friday, Feb. 1, and will occur from 6-8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Artwork will remain on display at Dos Gatos through Monday, Feb. 25.

“First Fridays are important to the local art scene, and I wanted to ensure that the work of Milligan students was on display downtown,” said Art Brown, assistant professor of communication. “This exhibit will be a fun, pop-up show. While our downtown exhibit has traditionally been called, ‘Art from the Buffalo School,’ we revised the name to highlight our new location. We appreciate the support of Dos Gatos and its owner, Dick Nelson.”

The show highlights the creativity of Milligan’s graphic design and fine arts majors and will include student paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media and graphic design. The exhibit will feature approximately 30 pieces, each selected by a student-panel.

“It’s exciting to have our work featured downtown,” said junior photography major Ashlyn Lightfoot. “This exhibit provides an opportunity to speak on behalf of Milligan through our artwork and receive support from the community.”

Milligan’s graphic design major offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines creativity and artistic abilities with industry-leading software to teach students visual communication and problem-solving that has applications in many sectors of the job market. The Milligan fine arts department offers five areas of emphasis: art, cinema, music, photography and theatre arts. All fine arts majors are designed to educate the whole person while increasing the student’s appreciation and knowledge of human creativity.
