Milligan hires electrical engineering faculty
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (July 5, 2016) – Milligan College’s new engineering program continues to fill its faculty ranks with its latest hire, Dr. Jeffrey Giesey, associate dean at the Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University.
Giesey will teach electrical engineering at Milligan starting in fall 2017. In addition to an extensive background in electrical engineering and bioengineering, he was a Fulbright Fellow in 2001.
Offering mechanical and electrical engineering majors, Milligan’s engineering program is a four-year major offered from the Milligan campus in Northeast Tennessee. The program begins in August and is the only such program within a two-hour radius of the Tri-Cities.
“Hiring Dr. Giesey is another big step toward building a strong team of engineering faculty at Milligan,” said Dr. Garland Young, Milligan’s vice president for academic affairs. “In addition to his broad classroom and administrative experience, Dr. Giesey also has a deep commitment integrating his Christian faith into his teaching, which is a distinguishing principle in all of Milligan’s academic programs.”
Giesey has received numerous awards and prestigious grants, including a Fulbright Fellowship in 2001 which allowed him to go to Namibia where he helped the Polytechnic of Namibia develop its first bachelor’s degree program in engineering.
After receiving a bachelor’s and master’s in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, Giesey earned a doctorate in bioengineering from the University of Michigan. In 2012, he assumed the role of associate dean at Russ College. Under his leadership, the program’s undergraduate enrollment increased by 28 percent and saw significant increases in multicultural and female student enrollment.
Giesey’s hiring comes soon after Milligan’s recruitment of another new faculty member for its engineering program, West Point professor Dr. David Hampton, who will begin teaching mechanical engineering at Milligan in fall 2017.
The Milligan engineering majors have been reviewed and approved by the college’s regional accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Milligan also will seek accreditation from ABET, whose accreditation standards the college’s engineering program has been designed to meet. In addition, Milligan’s engineering faculty are experienced and seasoned academicians who have been core faculty members in ABET-accredited programs. Local industry leaders already are endorsing the program and ready to offer internships and co-ops, as well as hire Milligan engineering graduates.
