Milligan a cappella concert features hits from Pentatonix and ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 14, 2015) — From Pentatonix to barbershop and movie favorites, Milligan College’s a cappella groups, Heritage and Heard Mentality, will perform a wide variety of selections at a joint spring concert on Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Milligan’s McGlothlin-Street Theatre in the Gregory Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature a range of popular and classic selections including the James Bond theme, “Wayfaring Stranger” and the “Wizard of Oz” classic “Over the Rainbow.” Genres include everything from jazz and pop to sacred and secular.

“Our first joint a cappella concert in 2012 became a favorite of audiences and singers alike, so we hope to keep this new tradition going at Milligan,” said Noah DeLong, director of Heritage and assistant professor of music. “This year’s concert is full of familiar favorites that will really showcase the talented students in these two groups.”

Heritage is Milligan’s premier traveling ensemble featuring men and women singers. Together, they represent the college throughout the region and country, performing everything from modern worship music to Broadway show tunes. With more than 20 years of history, the group is regularly sought after for their distinct a cappella style and presentation in churches and community groups.

Heard Mentality is an all-male ensemble directed by Dr. Charlotte Anderson, assistant professor of the practice of music at Milligan. The a cappella group began in 2007 with mostly barbershop and gospel, and they now also perform pop, jazz, be-bop, sacred hymns, some early music and traditional men’s glee.

The men of Heard Mentality are Joshua Crawford, Canaan Foriest, Collin Hawley, Gabriel Rees, Maverick Summie, Jake Thwing and Tim Wood. Heard Mentality will perform selections including “Lion Sleeps Tonight,” “Steal Away,” “I Get Around,” the James Bond Theme and “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow.”

Highlights from Heritage include “Say Something” by Pentatonix, “I Got Rhythm,” “Wayfaring Stranger” and “Be Ye Glad.”

The concert will close with a joint performance by both groups of the classic, Academy Award-winning ballad “Over the Rainbow.”

“Audiences not only will love the variety of music, but how the voices of both groups blend and craft fantastic arrangements of familiar tunes,” said Anderson. “This is one show not to miss.”
