MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 14, 2014) — The choral ensembles at Milligan College will join forces to present a concert titled “Choral Concert Extravaganza!” on Friday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.
Performing in the concert will be the Women’s Chorale, directed by Anne Elliot; the Concert Choir and Heritage, led by Noah DeLong; and Heard Mentality, directed by Charlotte Anderson.
“We are pleased to have all the choral ensembles join together once again for this concert,” Elliott said. “Offering a variety of music and styles, this concert promises to be a wonderful showcase of the unique sounds and selections of each group.”
The concert will open with pieces from the Women’s Chorale and Concert Choir. The a cappella groups Heritage and Heard Mentality will fill out the second half of the concert.
The Women’s Chorale will perform six pieces, including “With a Voice of Singing” by Martin Shaw, Mendelssohn’s “Lift Thine Eyes,” “Ubi Caritas” by Ola GJeilo and “I Have a True Love” by Charles McCartha. The last portion of their program presents a lovely setting of the famous Elizabeth Barrett Browning poem “How Do I Love Thee?” by Evan Copley and an exciting arrangement of “Hark! I Hear the Harps Eternal” with four-hand accompaniment by popular arranger Mark Hayes.
Concert Choir will open with “Lift Up Your Heads,” a movement from the recent performance of “Handel’s Messiah: A Celebration of God’s Amazing Grace.” They also will perform a sophisticated arrangement of “Amazing Grace” by Larry Nickel; and “Beautiful Savior,” with a solo by senior Emily May. In addition, assistant conductor Ben Davenport will lead the group in “Ain’t Got Time to Die” by Hall Johnson, and the group will conclude with “Ride on, King Jesus” by Moses Hogan.
In the second half of the concert, Heritage will open with a motet by Heinrich Schütz called “Cantate Domino canticum novum,” which translates to “Sing to the Lord a new song.” Following this piece will be “Brother James’s Air” by Gordon Jacob, “Lamb of God” by Twila Paris and “Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit” by William Dawson. The group also will perform a number of secular favorites, including “Yesterday” by the Beatles, “Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid” and “I’ll Run” by the a cappella group Pentatonix.
Heard Mentality will be singing their usual fun repertoire “Trashin’ the Camp” from “Tarzan” by Phil Collins and the theme from “James Bond.” In addition, they will perform “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrows” by Carter Stanley and Kirby Shaw, “The Nearness of You” by Hoagy Carmichael and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Freddie Mercury. They will conclude with a special adaptation of “People Get Ready” by Curtis Mayfield and a performance of “Lay up Your Treasures in Heaven” by Pepper Choplin.
The concert will end with a performance of “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay, featuring Heritage, Heard Mentality and senior Matt Rees as soloist.
“We have such great singers at Milligan, and combining all of the vocal ensembles in one spring concert will make for a great evening of music,” said DeLong.
