MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 4, 2013) — Milligan College’s P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library will host its third annual Edible Books Festival on Monday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 16.
The festival showcases edible entries inspired by books. Past entries include everything from creative concoctions based on book titles to depictions of famous literary characters. Entries will be judged on the tastiest, funniest or “punniest,” most creative and overall favorite.
Contestants may drop off their entries in the Welshimer Room of the library on April 15, from 8-10 a.m. The public is invited to view and vote on the entries from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.
On April 16, a panel of Milligan judges will taste all entries and vote on the “tastiest entry” award. At 9:30 a.m., library staff will announce the winners and award prizes.
The International Edible Book Festival is held annually around the globe in April. More than 20 countries have participated in the event, which is often shared on the internet through websites and social media.
“The library staff is always looking for fun new events and this one, with its mix of creativity, books and food, was a perfect fit for the Milligan community,” said Mary Jackson, research and instruction librarian at Milligan.
In 2011, Meredith Sommers, information resources librarian and archivist at Milligan, suggested that the festival be brought to Milligan’s campus after she had participated in one during graduate school. The first two festivals were a huge success at Milligan.
“Now with our third festival, we think it will be bigger and better,” Jackson said.
The library decided this year to coordinate the festival to fit with the schedule for the freshman humanities students. Each spring, humanities students participate in a creativity project to enhance their learning. This year, students will have the option to create an edible book that coincides with their studies.
