Milligan SGA to host 27-hour ‘Stand for Freedom’

S4F-Promo-Poster-ColorMILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Feb. 25, 2013) — The Student Government Association of Milligan College will host a 27-hour Stand for Freedom event, March 5-6, to raise money and awareness for efforts to end slavery throughout the world.

Stand for Freedom begins on Tuesday, March 5, at 2 p.m., and ends Wednesday, March 6, at 5 p.m., in Milligan’s McMahan Student Center. During that 27-hour period, participants will raise money, share stories of rescue, sign pledges to stop slavery and learn other ways to get involved.

Stand for Freedom events are part of an outreach of International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency that brings rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.

According to statistics from IJM, 27 million people are enslaved throughout the world today, which is the largest amount in history. Participants in Milligan’s Stand for Freedom will raise awareness of slavery and take a stand to help end it.

“SGA wanted to inform our campus that slavery still exists and that we can stand up for the individuals who do not have a voice and cannot stand on their own,” said SGA President Danica Collins. “The Stand for Freedom is a way to be become more engaged with the community and help other people.”

IJM’s justice professionals work in their communities in 16 field offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America to secure tangible and sustainable protection of national laws through local court systems. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to secure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators, and to ensure that public justice systems — police, courts and laws — effectively protect the poor.
