Butler to perform guitar recital at Milligan
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 9, 2013) — Award-winning performer and composer Justin Butler will present a guitar recital at Milligan College on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre of the Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. The performance is free and open to the public.
Butler, an adjunct music instructor at Milligan, will perform the solo guitar music of Agustin Barrios, Astor Piazzolla, J.S. Bach, Mauro Giuliani and Django Reinhardt. The music he will play spans the Baroque era to modern jazz, and will include the premiere of Butler’s original work, “Amusipik.”
Butler is an artist in residence at Appalachian State University (North Carolina), and teaches guitar and music history classes at Milligan and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (North Carolina).
In addition to a heavy solo performance schedule, he performs with several ensembles and has performed at major venues across the United States, Canada and Japan.
He began his music studies at age 10, starting with guitar and saxophone, and later learning the piano. He began performing professionally at age 16, playing solo guitar recitals, small ensemble performances and with jazz combos.
Butler received performance and academic scholarships to study music at The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, where he studied with Doug James and received an undergraduate and master’s degree in music performance. He also studied the Suzuki method at the Hartt School (Connecticut) and at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He has shared the stage with such notable musicians as Doug James, Andy Page, Matt Palmer, Grammy award-winning Damian Marley, blues legend Etta Baker, The Wailers and Gregory Isaacs.
