Lecture explores Cyril’s style of biblical interpretation

Dr. Lee BlackburnMILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Oct. 26, 2012) — Dr. B. Lee Blackburn will deliver a lecture, titled “The Bishop, the Law, and the Jews in Ancient Alexandria,” on Monday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in Milligan College’s Hyder Auditorium, located in the Science Building. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Blackburn is the director of the humanities program and an assistant professor of history and humanities at Milligan, where he has taught since 2008.

His lecture will discuss research on Cyril, the fifth-century bishop of Alexandria, and his commentaries on the Law of Moses.

“The presentation will provide an introduction to Cyril, his world and his style of biblical interpretation,” Blackburn said. “It will also explore how Cyril’s interpretation raises pressing questions about how Christians are to read the Old Testament, as well as how Christians should relate with Jews.”

Blackburn has a Ph.D. in theology and a Master of Theological Studies from the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Ind.). He earned his bachelor’s degree in English and history from Milligan.

In addition, Blackburn also has published articles in journals such as Stone-Campbell Journal, Leaven and Studia Patristica. He has presented at conferences in both the United States and England.

His areas of expertise include ancient and medieval church history.

Blackburn is a member of Hopwood Memorial Christian Church.
