Milligan Concert Choir presents spring concert

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 23, 2012) — The Milligan College Concert Choir will present a spring concert on Friday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.

The theme of the concert, “How Can I Keep from Singing,” is taken from the opening piece, arranged by Daniel H. Graves.  Following that is a song of praise from Zimbabwe called “Uyai Mose.”

Next on the program are three hymn arrangements — “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” “My Song in the Night” and “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow” — the last of which will feature the men of the choir. The first part of the program will conclude with a spiritual, “Obey the Spirit of the Lord,” and a gospel piece, “Shout Glory!”

The second set in the concert is comprised of pieces from various eras inspired by birds. First is the Italian Madrigal “Il bianco e dolce cigno” by Jacques Arcadelt, then the Romantic part-song “Die Nachtigall” by Felix Mendelssohn, and finally “Little Birds” by contemporary composer Eric Whitacre.

The last part of the concert focuses on songs about love. “If Music Be the Food of Love” by David C. Dickau, “Sing Me to Heaven” by local composer Daniel E. Gawthrop, and “What Wondrous Love” by Robert Scholz will be featured during this set.

The concert will close with “Nelly Bly” by Stephen Foster and a setting of the benediction “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by John Rutter.

Featured soloists include junior Lauren Holt of Morristown, Tenn.; sophomore Nancy Schranz of Tallahassee, Fla.; sophomore Teagan Wood of Kingsport, Tenn.; and senior Brennan Seth Tracy, of Oblong, Ill.

The concert choir, under the direction of Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music at Milligan, is an auditioned mixed choir of 40 singers who represent a variety of majors and backgrounds. Erin Raines, a junior from Mechanicsville, Va., is the accompanist.
