Milligan students earn awards at Appalachian Student Research Forum

L-R: Dr. Joy Drinnon, Natalia Rivas and Jessie Davis

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 19, 2012) — Milligan College students Jessie Davis and Natalia Rivas received awards at the Appalachian Student Research Forum held at East Tennessee State University earlier this month.

Davis, a senior psychology major  from Frederick, Md., earned a second place award in the Social, Behavior, and Learning Category Group A for her project titled “A Comparative Study for Motivation for Volunteering Between Two Home Repair Ministry Organizations: Habitat for Humanity and Appalachia Service Project.”

Davis’ interest in volunteer motivations came from her work with Habitat for Humanity and her desire to know what made so many people dedicate their time to volunteer organizations.

Rivas, a junior from Jonesborough, Tenn.,  also received a second place award in the category of Society, Learning, and Behavior for her research titled “‘Just Say No!’: A Three Part Study of Sex Education and Reported Reasons to Abstain from Sexual Behaviors by Late Adolescents.”

Rivas’ research focused on the reasons adolescents abstain from sexual behaviors and the reasons sex education programs gave them to abstain.

“I chose this topic because not all schools and states have the same policy on what type of sex education they offer, and I wanted to know why,” Rivas said.

Dr. Joy Drinnon, associate professor of psychology at Milligan, mentored Davis and Rivas for the past year as they developed their research. Four students from Milligan presented their research at the forum.

“The fact that two prizes went to two out of the four students from Milligan reflects well on our academic programs,” Drinnon said.
