Milligan library’s innovative search tool earns high accolades

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 30, 2012) — EBSCO, a leading producer of research databases, recently featured Milligan College’s P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library in its promotional materials for the integration of the library’s new “MCSearch” tool using EBSCO Discovery Services (EDS).

In an effort to make library resources more accessible to students and faculty, the Milligan library staff implemented the powerful EDS research platform to make searching the myriad of ebooks, academic journals, encyclopedias, streaming media and print volumes available through the library both quick and simple.

The “MCSearch” tool on the library website (www.milligan.edu/library) allows students and faculty to apply a single query simultaneously to both the library’s print collection and the majority of its electronic resources—maximizing the search results.

Gary Daught, director of library services at Milligan, was the primary catalyst behind the implementation of MCSearch, which was launched in fall 2011. The implementation process took three and a half months to complete.

EBSCO’s recognition of MCSearch comes on the heels of another recent honor for the Milligan library.

The library’s website, designed by Daught and librarian assistant Jack Weinbender, earned the Milligan library the title of “College Library Website of the Month” for March 2012 from the Communications Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), for its College Libraries Section. Criteria for selection included overall appearance, navigation, user-friendly explanations and simple database searching through the “MCSearch” tool.

The ACRL’s College Libraries Section recognizes that a library’s website, in addition to enhancing access to a library’s resources and services, functions as a major means of communication with its users. The library websites selected by the ACRL are listed on the ACRL website in the College Libraries Section, along with a brief summary outlining the reasons for their selection.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition from our professional colleagues,” said Daught. “We have worked hard to make the website uncluttered yet attractive, easy to navigate and resource-focused. The website design was primarily a collaboration between me and Jack Weinbender, whose coding skills brought the design to life. However, all the library staff gave us important usability input along the way, and we received wonderful technical and server support from the Milligan IT Department.”
