Guest lecture to address the beauty in mathematics and music

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 23, 2012) — Dr. Matt DeLong, professor of mathematics at Taylor University, will present a guest lecture, titled “Beauty in Mathematics and Music,” at Milligan College on Thursday, March 29, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Wilson Auditorium, located in Hardin Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

“It has long been recognized that there is a tight connection between mathematics and music,” said DeLong. “For some, this connection is based on the two disciplines’ quantitative and symbolic natures.”

DeLong’s lecture will argue that the real connection between mathematics and music is aesthetics. He will compare notions of beauty regarding each subject, using several examples of each. He also will discuss the role beauty plays in Christian faith and worship.

DeLong received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics in 1993 from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1998.

He has taught mathematics at Taylor University, a Christian liberal arts college in Upland, Ind., since 1998. This setting has allowed him to maintain a variety of interests, including number theory, knot theory, faculty development, coaching little league sports, singing and conducting sacred choral music, performing and directing in musical theater, and singing in his faculty quartet Quadrivium.

DeLong was awarded the 2005 Alder Award and the 2012 Haimo Award for distinguished teaching from the Mathematical Association of America. His brother, Noah DeLong, is assistant professor of music at Milligan.
