Milligan’s ‘Steppin’ Into Oz’ to raise funds for One7

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Feb. 16, 2012) — Milligan College’s step team, Stompede, is stepping up to help raise funds for One7, an organization that focuses on transforming the lives of inner city youth and families.

Stompede and One7 will join forces to present “Steppin’ Into Oz,” on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre of Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. The performance is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted to benefit One7 and Stompede.

Traditionally, step shows involve performances by several teams, each with a fluent, sometimes familiar storyline. Using the rhythm-driven beats of step dancing to tell the story, Milligan’s production will follow the plot of the classic “Wizard of Oz.” The audience will follow Dorothy as she is swept up into Oz, meets the iconic characters and journeys to find the wonderful Wizard of Oz. The team also will perform a traditional African style dance number in honor of Black History Month.

The show will include performances by One7 participants, ranging in age from 9 to 15 years old.

“Stompede is delighted to perform a number featuring some Johnson City’s One7 kids,” said junior Katie Cachiaras, a Stompede member.

“Steppin Into Oz” isn’t the first time Milligan students have worked with kids through the One7 organization.

“For the past year and a half, Milligan and East Tennessee State University student One7 volunteers have been going to the Carver Recreation Center in Johnson City to spend time with kids, help with homework, and invest in their lives, continually seeking to manifest Christ and his love,” Cachiaras said.
