Video by Elizabethton native selected in national tuition contest

Kelly AubreyMILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 1, 2011) – Dr Pepper is known for its distinctive and refreshing taste, but the company has also made paying for college a bit easier to swallow for a few lucky individuals, including Milligan College sophomore Kelly Aubrey.

Aubrey, a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., received a $2,500 scholarship from Dr Pepper’s Million Dollar Tuition Giveaway. She is currently pursuing a mathematics degree at Milligan and hopes to teach math and coach volleyball.

In 2010, Dr Pepper teamed with Lou Holtz, Hall of Fame head coach and ESPN college football analyst, to provide students throughout the United States with tuition scholarships. The Million Dollar Tuition Giveaway contest required participants to submit a minute-long video explaining why they deserve money for their college tuition. Contestants were also required to incorporate college football and Dr Pepper into their videos.

Aubrey’s video was a hit, and on Dec. 30, 2010, she learned she would receive a scholarship from Dr Pepper.

“I had just about given up on winning tuition money,” Aubrey said. “When I finally got the call, I was on a basketball trip in Florida, and I was so excited.”

Dr Pepper is one of the oldest major soft drinks in the United States. The drink was originally made and sold in Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas in 1885. The owner of the store, Wade Morrison, named the drink “Dr Pepper” after Dr. Charles Pepper, a Virginia doctor who was also the father of a girl Morrison once loved.
