Milligan sets enrollment record by focusing on personal touch

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Aug. 24, 2010) — Milligan College announced today that the college will set a record fall enrollment for the fourth year in a row, with 1,130 students, a jump of over 100 students in the past two years.

Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing, Lee Fierbaugh, made the announcement today at an 11 a.m. campus chapel service. She pointed out that the college is to be commended for maintaining a personal touch in the delivery of its educational mission, even as the college grows.

“The Milligan difference is one that values the individual in the context of community,” said Fierbaugh. “It’s in the heart and souls of our faculty and staff to truly care about our students—their education, their faith, and their futures.”

Building community is the focus of many activities at Milligan, including last week’s Welcome Week orientation. New students received personal advising from faculty while engaging in social activities with peer teams, including meals at their professors’ homes. Fierbaugh said that’s just the beginning.

“We have a distinctive mission of trying to see life and learn from a Christian vantage point,” said Fierbaugh. “That means, among other things, that we’re service-oriented.”

Fierbaugh said this year’s record enrollment is credited largely to a new student class of 275 traditional undergraduate students, the second largest in 13 years, and strong undergraduate retention. The college’s Graduate and Professional Studies programs also continue to expand, including a new MBA class being offered this fall at Walters State Community College in Morristown.

Milligan has 858 traditional undergraduate students, 211 in its three graduate programs, and 61 in adult degree-completion programs enrolled this fall. Fall classes began Aug. 18. Final enrollment numbers will be issued Sept. 1 by the college’s Registrar’s Office.

“It’s important for Milligan to maintain its personality, academic quality, and stay true to its mission as a Christian liberal arts college. We’re excited about this year and the future of Milligan,” said President Donald R. Jeanes, who has been president at the Christian liberal arts college since 1997.
