Volunteers needed for Ukraine clothing drive at Milligan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 8, 2010) — Volunteers are needed to help collect and pack clothes for Ukraine on Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17, at Milligan College. The clothing will be distributed to Ukrainian orphans, widows and the disabled.

Packing will take place in the parking lot of Milligan’s Physical Plant on Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individuals may also drop off clothing donations during these times. People interested in volunteering to help with the effort are encouraged to sign up for shifts at www.signupgenius.com/go/sorting.

Milligan’s LINC (Linking Individuals to the Needs of the Community) ministry is coordinating the volunteers in cooperation with MASTER Provisions, a non-profit organization that ministers to economically devastated countries and brings hope using clothing as a tool to assist the church. Based in Walton, Ky., MASTER Provisions is directed by Milligan alumnus Roger Babik.

During the packing process, the clothing is press-loaded into a 40-foot high cube container, creating a load of about 35,000 pounds. The clothing will be shipped to Ukraine, where wages are low and unemployment is high. Clothing that is not given away will be sold through Christian businesses at incredibly low prices. The prices are set low so that Ukrainians are able to afford the clothing and cover the cost of overseas shipping, warehouse rental and custom duties.

Local churches involved in collecting clothing include Crossroads Christian Church, Harrison Christian Church, University Parkway Baptist Church, Johnson City Alliance Church, East Unaka Christian Church, Boone Trail Baptist Church, Valley Forge Christian Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Walnut Christian Church, Boones Creek Christian Church, Central Christian Church of Jonesborough, Westside Christian Church, Cherokee United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church of Elizabethton.
