MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 31, 2009) – The Milligan College Orchestra announces its spring concert on Friday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel on the Milligan College campus.
The program, under the direction of Dr. Kellie Brown, will feature Baroque works for string orchestra and harpsichord along with pieces by Edvard Grieg, Karl Jenkins, Leroy Anderson and Gustav Holst. Dr. David Runner, professor of music, will perform on a Burton harpsichord that was donated to the music department in the early 1980s.
Brown, associate professor of music, has been a member of the Milligan College music faculty since 1998. She serves as chair of the music department and director of the strings program and Milligan College Orchestra. She also is a frequent performer throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and is the founder and principal violinist of the Appalachian String Quartet.
The Milligan College Orchestra was founded in 1999 as an expansion of the string program at Milligan. The orchestra provides an excellent ensemble experience for Milligan students and has broadened into the community to include students from East Tennessee State University and area high schools, as well as Milligan alumni and members from the community.
The orchestra performs throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and collaborates frequently with area ensembles, including the Johnson City Civic Chorale, the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and the East Tennessee Children’s Choir.
