Milligan Concert Choir closes spring tour at home


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 7, 2008) — The Milligan College Concert Choir will close out their annual spring tour with a concert at Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel on Friday, Mar. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

The group’s 10-day tour includes performances at numerous venues in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, performing various styles of choral music, from classical to contemporary. Numerous well-known selections are included in the concert.

A mixed group of 30 students from throughout the United States and Brazil , many of the students in the choir are music majors or minors who plan careers in music education or in music ministry. Various other majors are also represented in the group.

The Milligan choir upholds a long tradition as an outstanding college choir. At the invitation of the President, the choir has sung at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC, and toured throughout England, with special performances in Coventry Cathedral and in the Civic Centre of the City of Birmingham.

More recently, the Milligan College Concert Choir sang at the Conference on World Evangelism-National Missionary Convention and the Tennessee State Convention of the American Choral Directors’ Association.

The Milligan Concert Choir is under the direction of John Wakefield, associate professor of music at Milligan. Wakefield is a veteran of many years as a choral conductor in Illinois, California and Ohio. He is active in the American Choral Directors Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, the National Church Music Conference, and The Hymn Society of the United States and Canada.

Milligan alumnus Joel Buckner will serve as accompanist. Buckner, a native of Johnson City, Tenn., is the owner of A Touch of Class Piano and serves as pianist at Grandview Christian Church in Johnson City.
