Milligan celebrates campaign success

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 20, 2006) — Five years ago, Milligan College launched the largest capital campaign in the college’s history. At a Friday luncheon this week, college officials and the campus community will celebrate the successful conclusion of the $30 million Campaign for Christian Leadership.

The comprehensive campaign provided more than 50 new student scholarships and endowed funds, strengthened the endowment, led to facility improvements or additions to more than a dozen campus buildings, and saw the development of nearly two dozen new academic and student life initiatives.

“We have an exciting vision, a critically needed mission, and a compelling story to tell,” said Milligan College President Donald R. Jeanes. “We’ve been blessed by the response and encouragement of our alumni and friends.”

Jeanes said that more than 2,000 new donors joined the nearly 7,000 who gave to the campaign over its five year period. The college also saw record high participation from its alumni, placing the college among the highest in alumni giving percentages at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Also during the campaign the college noted its highest student enrollment, with 964 students enrolled this past fall. Plans continue for enhanced growth in coming years – both in students and in programs and facilities.

During the five year campaign, Derthick Hall, the Baker Faculty Office Center, McCown Business Offices, and the Taylor/Phillips House were completely renovated. The Mary Sword Commons was created, a new maintenance building and the Paul Clark Teacher Education Center were constructed, the Mathes Tennis Center was dedicated, and the campus acreage expanded. Improvements were also made to Anglin Athletic Field, the McMahan Student Center, and the college’s residence halls.

The crowning point of the campaign was the groundbreaking for the new 30,000 square foot Elizabeth Leitner Gregory Convocation Center, which will house a new theatre and fine arts facilities for the liberal arts college. The building is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2007.

Academic and student life programs were also expanded, including the addition of an MBA program, the Institute for Servant Leadership, Student Success and Mentoring program, and Youth in Ministry. The Institute for Servant Leadership alone accounts for nearly two dozen new academic and spiritual life programs that have enhanced the college’s mission of educating servant-leaders.

“During the past five years, we have seen amazing things happen and can share story after story of students and individuals whose lives have been touched by Milligan,” said Jeanes. “The next several months will be filled with celebration and thanksgiving, even as we continue toward our annual scholarship funding needs and plans for the future.”

Jeanes said that the college will celebrate its progress and success with alumni and donors at the college’s annual Homecoming festivities October 27-28.

“Everyone’s support was essential to the campaign’s success, from the $10 gift to the multi-million dollar gift,” said Jeanes. “It has been a group effort of sacrifice and commitment to a shared mission that we all recognize as extremely important in higher education, in our communities, and in our churches.”
