Several new faces at Milligan College


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN ( September 1, 2005 ) — A new school year brings several new faculty to Milligan College classrooms.

Joining the full-time faculty are:

Teresa A. Carter returns to her alma mater as the new assistant professor of computer information systems. Carter earned a master of science in computer information science from the University of Phoenix. Carter previously taught and was department head in the computer science department at Northeast State Community College.

Teresa A. Heaton joins the faculty as assistant professor of nursing. Heaton earned a bachelor of science in nursing and a master of public health degree from East Tennessee State University. She worked in the private sector and most recently as hospital educator with Mountain States Health Alliance.

John R. Jackson joins the faculty as assistant professor of Bible and humanities. Jackson holds a doctorate in Hebrew Bible from Duke University, a bachelor degree and master of divinity degrees from Abilene Christian University and a master of sacred theology degree from Drew University.

Tammy R. Samples joins the faculty as assistant professor of nursing. Samples earned a bachelor of science degree as well as a master of science degree in nursing from East Tennessee State University. She has extensive pediatric experience and previously worked at the Johnson City Medical Center where she served as the neonatal outreach educator and neonatal intensive care unit transport coordinator.

Joining the faculty on a part-time or limited appointment are:

Tausha Clay has a one year appointment as assistant professor of the practice of education. She is currently completing her doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis at East Tennessee State University. She will supervise student teachers and interns.

Dr. Donald R. Schmalzried and Helen M. Bowman will share a three year appointment in education. Schmalzried will serve as professor of the practice of education and coordinator of field experience. He was an administrative coordinator for secondary schools in the Fairfax county ( Va. ) school system. Bowman will be assistant professor of the practice of educations. Bowman was recently inducted into the Tennessee Teacher Hall of Fame.

Christy Fellers is the new fieldwork coordinator for the occupational therapy program at Milligan. Fellers holds a bachelor of science degree in biology and a master of science in occupational therapy from Milligan College. She worked as an occupational therapist at the Johnson City Medical Center, specializing in the treatment of acute neurological injuries and illnesses.

“Milligan’s faculty are a tremendous strength to the college’s success. More than 70 percent have earned the highest degree in their field and all are committed Christians who are committed to their students,” said Dr. Mark Matson, vice president for academic affairs and dean.
