Business office renovation provides one-stop service for students

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (August 31, 2005) — The renovation of McCown Cottage Business Office is nearing completion. The renovation includes an addition to make space for the college’s new Student Financial Services office and to optimize traffic flow.

What were once two separate offices, the Financial Aid Office and the Office of Student Accounts, will now operate under the name of Student Financial Services and be housed on the first floor of McCown. The benefit to students is “one stop service,” where all issues and questions related to finances are handled by the same office and personnel.

“We are among the first colleges and universities who are adopting this leading-edge trend in rethinking how students interface with the college business office,” said Becky Brewster, Milligan College director of student financial services.

Brewster said the staff is excited about the new approach to student service and their newly restructured roles.

“Student service is our number one priority in this transition,” explained Brewster. “This streamlines the financial aid and account payment processes by centralizing many functions. It provides better service to our students.”

As director, Brewster will oversee the Student Financial Services area. Patty Edwards will serve as coordinator of student accounts and Diane Keasling will be coordinator of financial aid.

Sharon Greatti, who previously was part-time in student accounts, Gloria Daniels, who was part-time in financial aid and athletics, and Elaine Knowlton, who was full-time in financial aid, will serve as the college’s new student financial services counselors. They will be supported by Debbie Street , technical specialist, and Lisa Bowman, receptionist.

Built in 1913 as a home for the college president and his family, McCown Cottage was originally designed by Mary Hardin McCown, home economics teacher and daughter of George W. Hardin, the college’s treasurer. In 1937 as part of her “Milligan the Beautiful” campaign, first lady Perlea Derthick renovated the home, doubling the size of the upstairs and adding a new entrance and driveway.

In 1976, a new president’s home, Little Hartland, was built. From the late 1960s to 1980s, McCown Cottage was used to house campus guests upstairs and offices downstairs. For the past 15 years, the entire building has been used for administrative offices.
