Awards Convo honors Milligan students


MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN (May 3, 2005) — Milligan College ‘s Awards Convocation was a special day for many Milligan students who were honored for their academic accomplishments this past year. More than 50 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony. The awards are listed below, with students’ names, hometowns, and award received. Local award recipients are listed at the top.

Local student awards:

The Performing and Visual Arts Scholarship is awarded each year to a rising junior or senior fine arts major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who also has found significant ways to connect to the many facets of Milligan’s fine arts program. This year’s recipient was Robert Kitchens of Elizabethton, Tenn.

The Chamber Orchestra Award was presented to Rebekah Abbott of Johnson City, Tenn. The Ross Bader Concert Choir Award is presented each year to the person deemed to have made the greatest contribution to the musical and spiritual life of the Concert Choir. The recipient is selected by vote of the Concert Choir members. This year’s recipient was Justin Stauffer of Elizabethton, Tenn.

The Humane Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Irene Loloci of Abingdon, Va. The Professional Learning (Business) Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Brandon Talbert of Mt. Carmel, Tenn.

The Outstanding Mathematics Major Award was presented to Sherri Campbell of Bluff City, Tenn.

The Outstanding Biology Student Award was presented to Beth Jackson of Unicoi, Tenn.

Missy Carter of Jonesborough, Tenn., was recognized with the Undergraduate Student Teaching Award for early childhood education. The Master of Education Intern Awards were presented to Robin Ivester of Piney Flats, Tenn., for early childhood, and Todd Baldwin of Greenville, Tenn., for secondary education.

The Paul Clark Teacher Education Award was presented to Donna Seagroves of Erwin, Tenn.

The Certification of Recognition from the Girl Scouts, USA went to Eveleigh Hatfield of Elizabethton, Tenn.

The Student Leadership Award was presented to Melanie Veasey of Blountville , Tenn. The award is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates servant leadership, virtuous character, active leadership responsibility and potential, and serves as a role model to other students.

The Outstanding Female Athlete Award was presented to Lacy York of Johnson City, Tenn.

Other award recipients:

Theatre Recognition Awards acknowledge graduating seniors who have made a significant contribution to the theatre program while a student at Milligan. The recipients were Danisha Bethune of Anchorage, Alaska; Amber Carderelli of Lynchburg, Va.; Missie Mills of Jacksonville, Fla.; Martha Rose of Staunton, Va.; and Crystal VanMeter of Evansville, Ind.

The Fine Arts Award is presented to a graduating senior whose major is fine arts. Along with excellence in the classroom, this award acknowledges the student who has best exemplified what it means to be an artist. This year’s recipient was Diane Hostetler of North Lawrence, Ohio.

The Music Educators National Conference Student Chapter Award was presented to senior Cheri Lomison of New Castle, Ind. The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Music is presented to the person deemed to have most consistently exhibited excellence in music courses, ensembles and personal performance. The recipient is selected by vote of the full-time music faculty. This year’s recipient was Erika Phillips of Helenwood, Tenn.

The Outstanding Communication Student Scholarship Award was presented to Mandi Mooney of Rittman, Ohio. The WJHL Lancaster Scholarship Awards were presented to Cassie Lomison of New Castle , Ind. , and Sara Manny of Jacksonville, Fla. The Johnson City Press Tom Hodge Journalism Scholarship was presented to Mandi Mooney.

The Humanities Award was presented to Austin Turner of Franklin, Tenn.

The German Award is presented on the basis of outstanding achievement, exemplary commitment and measurable progress in the acquisition of German language skills. This year’s recipient was Amos Nidiffer of Franklin, Tenn. The French Award was presented to sophomore Cheri Lomison of New Castle, Ind. The Spanish Award was presented to Micah Antanaitis of Hermitage, Tenn. The Greek Award was presented to David Bielik of St. Louis, Miss. The English Awards were presented to Rachel Cunningham of Waterford, Ohio, and Claire Miller of St. Vienna, Ohio .

The Standard Publishing Award for Outstanding Promise in Christian Education was presented to Melissa McGovern of Greenwood, Ind. The Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Award was presented to Travis Weeks of Savannah, Ga.

The Sociology Award for Excellent Academic Performance was presented to Melissa McGovern. The Sociology Student Service Learning Award was presented to Amanda Keller of Ellicott City, Md. The Student Psychology Major of the Year Award was presented to Karissa Schrage of Joplin, Mo.

The Biblical Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Lisa Brandon of Louisville, Ky.

The Social Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Tera Bradley of Troy, Ohio.

The Institute of Managerial Accountants Outstanding Accounting Student Awards were presented to Crystal Craigo and Kristen Silver, both of Bakersville, N.C. The Wall Street Journal Award was presented to Mitch Scott of McCoy, Va. The Legal Studies Award was presented to Andrew Hopper of Anderson, Ind.

The Chemistry Student Award was presented to Sarah McPeak of Gordonsville, Va. The Lone L. Sisk Award was presented to Juli Roach of Cass City, Mich. The Scientific Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship recipient was Austin Turner of Franklin, Tenn.

The Outstanding Senior Nursing Award was presented to Kristen Mitchell of Juliet, Ill. The Professional Learning (Nursing) Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Jessica Fenton of Christiansburg, Va.

The Human Performance and Exercise Science Award was presented to Trevor Donovan of Pittsford, N.Y. The Human Performance and Exercise Science Physical Education Award was presented to Nathan Meade of Lebanon, Va.

The Undergraduate Student Teaching Award was presented to Ashley Adkins of Fairfield, Ohio, for secondary education. The Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Jessica Shotwell of Brentwood, Tenn. The Professional Learning (Education) Outstanding Student Scholarship went to Mandy Hawkins of Vero Beach, Fla.

The Outstanding Academic Student Award was presented to Andrew Hopper. The Outstanding Male Athlete Award was presented to Craig Emmert of Cass City, Mich.

The SGA Distinguished Service Award was presented to Shannon Paterson of Brownsburg, Ind.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award was presented to Rachel Cunningham.

The Student Appreciation Award was presented to Kim Parker, director of student life at Milligan College.
