Local musicians to fine tune their skills at Milligan strings workshop


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 19, 2005) – Over one hundred local string students, teachers and parents will fine tune their orchestral string techniques and overall musicianship at a strings workshop to be held at Milligan College on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, in Seeger Chapel.

String sections from Milligan College, Dobyns-Bennett High School, Science Hill High School, Johnson City Youth Orchestra and Symphony of the Mountains Youth Orchestra will receive instruction from renowned conductor and violinist Steven Leonard of Atlanta, Ga.

Leonard earned a bachelor of music degree with distinction in violin performance from the Eastman School of Music and a master of arts degree in music education from Truman State University. He has performed with the Colorado Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Eastman/Dryden Theater Orchestra, and served as assistant concertmaster and violinist with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.

Leonard has held teaching positions with the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Birmingham Southern College, Huntingdon College, Truman State University in Missouri, and the Jefferson County schools, as well as maintaining a private violin and viola studio.

The workshop, which is sponsored by a grant from the Massengill-DeFriece Foundation, is free and open to string players who have at least 3 years playing experience.
