Spring jazz concert to feature Loretta Bowers

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 11, 2005) Local singing talent and Carter County native Loretta Bowers will join the Milligan College Jazz Ensemble to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month.

The concert will be held on Monday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Seeger Chapel located on the Milligan College campus and is free and open to the public.

A variety of songs from the libraries of Count Basie, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Bill Watrous, and the rock group Chicago will be performed.

Bowers, a former Broadway vocalist in Ain’t Misbehavin , along with the Milligan Singers, will accompany the ensemble on two well-known favorites, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “I Believe.”

“This concert is our best yet,” said Rick Simerly, associate professor of music at Milligan College and director of the Jazz Ensemble. “April has been declared Jazz Appreciation Month by the Smithsonian Institute and what better way to observe it than by attending this concert and hearing some great jazz.”

The 21-piece ensemble consists of Milligan students, local high school and college students, as well as adults from throughout the region.

“This is an exciting lineup of songs that should appeal to everyone in attendance,” said Simerly.
