Milligan international students share their culture with elementary kids

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 14, 2005) — As part of a Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day, several Milligan College soccer students from Kenya, Ghana, Australia, Scotland, Ethiopia and Canada will share interesting facts about their countries and culture with Lincoln Elementary School students in Kingsport on Tuesday, Jan. 18, from noon to 3 p.m.

After the international students present their program, the team will give a soccer discussion and demonstration. Afterwards, they will meet in small group sessions to read with the children.

“It’s a wonderful experience to be able to share information about my country, Kenya , and its culture with the children. It’s part of people’s natural curiosity to wonder what things are like on the other side of the world. My hope is that the children will remember what we have talked about and the importance of freedom and appreciating other cultures,” said Alex Kimani, a senior from Nairobi, Kenya .

This presentation is one of several service projects that Milligan College will do in honor of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. In lieu of classes on Tuesday, the campus will spend the afternoon in service to the local community.
