Milligan campus to spend day in service honoring MLK Jr.


MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN (January 14, 2005) — Milligan College will honor and remember the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as the “Picture of a Servant Leader” through a series of events next week, culminating in a Day of Service on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

In lieu of classes on Tuesday, the campus will attend a 10 a.m. convocation and reflection service in Seeger Chapel, share in a campus brunch in the McCormick Dining Hall, and then spend the afternoon in service to the local community.

“This day of service is part of Milligan’s ongoing dedication to serving others. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and dreams reflect Milligan’s mission of servant leadership and it is appropriate for us to dedicate ourselves to serving those around us,” said Beth Anderson, director of Milligan College ‘s Institute for Servant Leadership.

Milligan students and personnel will volunteer at the following organizations on Tuesday, Jan. 18:

· King Benevolent Fund, 12:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. – Sort medicines for distribution to worldwide missions, including tsunami victims in Asia and East Africa .

· Appalachian Christian Village, Assisted Living, 1-5 p.m. – Talk and read to the residents, transport residents to bird viewing area and play games with residents.

· Girl’s Inc., 3-5 p.m. – Help lead an educational session on MLK, Jr. for 6-15 year old students that attend the after-school program. Assist in an accompanying craft project.

· Second Harvest Food Bank, 1-4 p.m. – Sort and box food.

· Carver Recreation, 3-5 p.m. – Lead art and crafts projects, help students with homework, read books, face paint and lead beading projects.

· Coalition for Kids, 1-5 p.m. – Paint lines on the basketball floor, help maintain their flower beds and assist in the after school program. The after school program begins at 3 p.m.

· Lincoln Elementary, noon to 3 p.m. – Soccer students from Kenya , Ghana , Australia , Scotland , Ethiopia and Canada will share interesting facts about their countries and culture with the children and give a soccer demonstration.

· Roosevelt Elementary School, 2 p.m. on Milligan College campus – Photographs by students at Roosevelt Elementary School in Kingsport will be featured at a special reception hosted by Milligan College photography students.

· Buffalo Mountain Camp, 1-5 p.m. – Help with trail work and build huts. Scrapbooking of photographs and development of bulletin boards at the camp.

· Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Elizabethton, 3-5 p.m. – Assist with the after-school program.

· Homework Club, 3-5 p.m. – Help tutor students that are part of the homework clubs.  The homework clubs are located in the Johnson City Schools, including Northside Side School, Southside School and Fairmont School .

· Pine Oaks Assisted Living, 1-5 p.m. – Assist in a presentation of a Martin Luther King, Jr. program.

· Girl Scouts, 1-5 p.m. – Inventory and archive uniforms, help store canvas tents at Camp Wildwood in downtown Johnson City.

· Salvation Army, 1-5 p.m. – Preparing and serving the evening meal and painting the facility.

· Good Samaritan Ministries/ Melting Pot, 1-5 p.m. – Organize and implement a spring cleaning for the Melting Pot facility.
