Local elementary school holds photography exhibit at Milligan

Milligan art students provide mentoring and reception in honor of MLK JR

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 13, 2005) —Photographs by students at Roosevelt Elementary School will be featured at a special reception hosted by Milligan College photography students on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. in the McMahan Student Center on the Milligan campus.

For the past several weeks, the elementary students have taken photographs in preparation for the exhibit. On Tuesday, Milligan fine arts students will help the younger students develop their photographs using the college’s darkroom, tutor the children about photography, and share with them what inspired them to pursue a degree in the arts.

The exhibit is one of several service projects that Milligan College will do in honor of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. In lieu of classes on Tuesday, the campus will spend the afternoon in service to the local community.

“This is the second year Milligan has held the exhibit for us. When the children visited the Milligan College Art Gallery , they were inspired by the Milligan students’ artwork. It is important to instill a love for the arts in children at a young age. An appreciation for the arts helps kids develop in all areas of classroom learning,” said Hollie Barnett, a communications graduate from Milligan College and director of Roosevelt Elementary School ‘s after-school photography program.

The photography program is part of Roosevelt ‘s Encore! Jr. program, an enrichment program funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant awarded to the school. It provides an after school program designed to expose elementary school children to the fine arts and higher learning.
