Milligan College Jazz Ensemble's Fall Concert to feature renown saxophonist, Doug Henry

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (November 8, 2004) — The Milligan College Jazz Ensemble will present its Fall Concert with guest artist Doug Henry on Monday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel on the campus of Milligan College. The concert is free and open to the public.

Henry, a renowned saxophonist and clarinetist, has performed with The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, Harry Connick, Jr., Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, The Temptations and many others.

Rick Simerly, director of the 21-piece ensemble and associate professor of music at Milligan College, said, “Doug Henry is as good as you’ll hear anywhere in the world, and we are very fortunate to have him as our guest artist for this concert.  To hear an artist of this caliber you would normally have to buy a ticket to one of the leading jazz clubs in the world. On November 22, the public will have an opportunity to hear him for free.”

The Milligan College Jazz Ensemble consists of Milligan students, local high school and college students, as well as adults from throughout the region. Earlier this year the group was an opening act for legendary jazz patriarch Ellis Marsalis at the Grove Park Jazz Festival in Asheville, N.C.

“This group is certainly one of the best that we have had at Milligan, and I couldn’t be more pleased with their progress. Our concert should be an exciting and entertaining night of music for everyone,” said Simerly.

The concert will showcase compositions and arrangements from the libraries of jazz classics, including Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Gordon Goodwin and Woody Herman.
