Milligan College sponsors Christian band with local roots

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (October 12, 2004) – Milligan College recently became a sponsor of Christian music band Alathea’s Fall 2004 Tour.

As part of the band’s tour to over 30 cities, Alathea will perform at Cross Roads Christian Church in Gray on Sunday, Nov. 21 and at Milligan College on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Alathea has a unique relationship to Milligan College and the region. Milligan College is the alma mater of two of the band’s members, Carrie Theobold and Mandee Radford. The alumnae met the third band member, Cristi Johnson, while students at Milligan and volunteers in a local teen ministry.

Alathea’s songs offer an array of Appalachian influences and instrumentation, thanks to the group’s roots and diverse musical tastes. The images, instrumentation and photography of the band remain true to the passion of the songs and their setting in the mountains of East Tennessee.

“The first time I stepped on the campus of Milligan College and heard the chapel bells ringing and saw the mountains in the distance, I knew that there were touches of the Divine in this place,” said Radford. “I am grateful for the breadth of education I received at Milligan and for a place where my faith could be rooted.”

The band’s name ‘Alathea’ pronounced (uh-Lay-thee-uh) is the Greek word for truth.

“Our hope is not that people will equate us with the truth, but will see God as the truth, seek Him, and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us,” said Johnson.

Milligan is underwriting the expense of Alathea’s transportation for the band’s tour. The van provided by the college is decorated with the Milligan logo, and materials about the school will be available at all Alathea performances.

The partnership will increase Milligan’s visibility and awareness among Alathea’s audience and communicate the college’s unique approach to higher education, a strong academic program from a Christian worldview and an emphasis on helping students fulfill their calling.

Don Jeanes, president of Milligan College, said, “We’re pleased to partner with Alathea. Milligan’s mission is about preparing men and women as servant-leaders, and Alathea is a living testament of that mission.”

Alathea is a Rocketown recording artist and the current cover artist of Christian Single magazine. In addition to their own tour dates and appearances with independent band Lost & Found, Alathea will also be a featured artist for December’s “Gloria” Christmas tour with label mates Ginny Owens, Shaun Groves and Watermark, among others.
