District Court Judge and guest lecturer celebrates 30 years on federal bench

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (November 13, 2003) — One of only a few remaining federal judges appointed by President Richard Nixon, United States District Court Judge Allen Sharp of Indiana is on campus at Milligan College this week as a guest lecturer in the college’s legal studies program. Judge Sharp will host a luncheon next Monday, Nov. 17, at the college in celebration of his 30th anniversary as a judge.

Since his commission was signed by President Nixon in October 1973, Judge Sharp has presided at more than 500 jury cases in all of the four locations of the federal court in the Northern District of Indiana. He has also set by special designation on three federal appeals courts in Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New Orleans. From 1981 to 1996, he served as chief judge of the Northern District federal court.

Sharp has been a guest lecturer in Milligan’s legal studies program for several years and is a strong proponent of the college’s Christian liberal arts curriculum. This week he is teaching a legal studies course on “Religious Freedom in America.”

“Judge Sharp is a tremendous asset to our program and he is instrumental in helping us educate our students with a Christian worldview of the legal field. We’re pleased to honor his life of public service and commend his 30 years of dedication to our country’s legal system,” said Mark Peacock, J.D., assistant professor of legal studies at Milligan.

Judge Sharp also teaches regularly in the history department at Butler University and Indiana University South Bend. He holds a B.A. degree from George Washington University, a J.D. degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and an M.A. in history from Butler University. He received the Honorary Doctor of Civil Laws degree from Indiana State University in 1979.

He has published a number of articles on legal and constitutional history and is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, the Bar Association of the Seventh Federal Circuit and the Indiana Judges Association. Judge Sharp is also a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

“Embracing a Christian worldview, Milligan’s legal studies program helps students develop an appreciation for the unique responsibility Christian legal professionals have in society,” said Mark Peacock, J.D., assistant professor of legal studies at Milligan. “We appreciate Judge Sharp for helping us accomplish that.”

Milligan’s legal studies program prepares students for law school through an enhanced knowledge of the American legal system, the legal profession and foundational legal topics. Students may minor in legal studies or major in business administration with an emphasis in legal studies.
