Tennessee State Board selects Milligan education professor


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Nov. 3, 2003) — Beverly Schmalzried, chair of the education area at Milligan College, has been selected as a member of the Tennessee State Board of Examiners for Teacher Education Program Approval.

State Board members serve on teams to review and recommend approval of undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs in Tennessee. Tennessee teacher education programs are reviewed to ensure they are in compliance with the standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the State of Tennessee licensing standards.

More than 200 college and university and local education agency personnel were nominated for the State Board of Examiners and 50 were selected to attend the training required to become State Board members.

Members of the Tennessee State Board of Examiners serve a three-year term. Members are trained by State Department of Education personnel and Dr. Antoinette Mitchell, associate vice president for accreditation of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

As chair of the education area at Milligan College, Schmalzried oversees Milligan’s education department which includes undergraduate teacher education programs in early childhood, middle grades, secondary and select K-12 specialty fields. The college also offers a master of education program at both the initial licensure and advanced levels.

Before joining the Milligan faculty, Schmalzried served as family policy administrator for the Air Force, where she directed all the programs for children and youth at a various bases around the world. Through her leadership, the Air Force’s early childhood education programs earned congressional accolades.
