Cunningham to perform at Milligan


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (September 2, 2003) — Concert Organist Paul Cunningham will present a guest recital in Seeger Chapel at Milligan College on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7:30pm.

This recital includes the premiere of three pieces by Dr. Maria Niederberger, professor of theory and composition at East Tennessee State University, and one of Cunningham’s own compositions.

Cunningham will also play works by Bach, Barber, Martin, Howells and Wills. Readings by Milligan faculty members will also be incorporated into the recital.

As a concert organist, Mr. Cunningham has appeared in concert throughout the United States and Europe, including the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle, and the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The Seattle chapter of the American Guild of Organists awarded him a study grant to study organ music of Eastern Europe in 1995. He has also been featured on “The Age of the Organ,” a syndicated national public radio program.

Cunningham, a South Carolina native, holds degrees from Winthrop College and Southern Methodist University. He has also studied at the University of North Texas, Portland State University and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Cunningham served as parish musician at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Morristown, Tenn., from 1999-2003. His church choirs were chosen to represent Tennessee by singing at the National Cathedral in the fall of 2002.

Currently Cunningham serves as the organist and director of music at First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro, NC.
