Exhibit on Elvis fans featured in Nashville

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (August 13, 2003) — The Tennessee Arts Commission Gallery in Nashville is featuring a photography exhibit by Johnson City artist Alice Anthony, assistant professor of art at Milligan, now through Sept. 12. Anthony’s exhibit, “Gone But Not Forgotten,” features photographs of Elvis fans visiting Graceland.

Growing up, Anthony’s family lived in a subdivision that adjoined the Graceland mansion, so she became used to having Graceland literally in her backyard. Even after she grew up and moved away from Memphis, each time she visited her family she would see the fans outside the mansion gates.

“I have never really understood why so many people of all ages keep coming to Graceland every year, but the crowds keep growing, even though Elvis has been gone now for almost 25 years,” said Anthony, who received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis and her master of fine arts from East Tennessee State University.

“For the past six years, I have concentrated on photographing and getting to know some of these loyal fans who come to pay homage to Elvis. These photographs represent the results of this ongoing project,” said Anthony.

Also featured in the exhibit is the mixed media sculpture of Herb Williams of Nashville.

An artist’s reception will be held for both artists on Friday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gallery, located at 401 Charlotte Ave., Nashville. The Gallery’s regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
