Student scholars attend national convention

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 8, 2003) – Several students and two faculty sponsors traveled to Washington D.C. in March to represent Milligan College at the national convention of Alpha Chi, the national college honor scholarship society. Four Milligan students presented papers at the convention.

Senior business administration and humanities major Emily Fuller of Silver Spring, Md., presented a paper entitled “Linguistic Analysis of Television Commercials.” Junior English and humanities major David Nydegger of Monticello, Ind., presented “Superficiality: Intentional Ambiguity in Katherine Mansfield’s Bliss and Marriage a la Mode.” Junior communications major Paige Wassel of Robinson, Ill., presented, “The Navy V-12: A Legacy of Leadership,” and junior biology major Stephanie Lyons of Elizabethton, Tenn., performed “Mozart’s 3rd Horn Concerto in E Major.”

Also representing Milligan College were senior accounting major Tony Jones of Bellville, Ohio, and chapter sponsors Lori Mills, associate professor of psychology, and Dennis Helsabeck Jr., associate professor of history.

Milligan’s Alpha Chi chapter president, Laura Jones of Indianapolis, Ind., was named one of ten Nolle scholarship winners. This scholarship carries a stipend of $1,500 and is awarded based on papers submitted by students.

In 2002, Milligan’s Alpha Chi chapter was recognized as one of approximately 40 chapters to receive a Star Chapter award. A star chapter must meet the following criteria: have a sponsor and student at the national/regional convention, have at least one student presentation at the convention, have a Benedict Fellowship and/or Nolle Scholarship nominee, sponsor one scholarly program on campus, induct and register members, and file an annual chapter report.

More than 500 students and faculty from 111 Alpha Chi chapters attended the convention, which featured 222 student presentations. In addition, delegates heard an address by the society’s 2003 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Dr. James Clifford, and attended chapter workshops.

Alpha Chi inducts students from all academic fields who rank in the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors at member institutions, which number more than 300.
