Do you have a green thumb?

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 17, 2003) – It’s that time of year when people in East Tennessee begin to work in their yards. The right location for planting your flowers is just one of many ideas that will be shared at the “So, How’s Your Green Thumb?” workshop to be hosted Friday, March 28, by the Associated Ladies for Milligan College (ALM).

“The biggest mistake a homeowner makes in gardening is putting the wrong plant in the wrong location,” said Vida Stansberry, head of landscaping at Milligan College. “Every plant requires different things to grow. A little research is needed before something is planted.”

There will be several presentations at the workshop by area gardening experts Tim Simounet, co-owner of Englewood Lawn and Landscapes, LLC; Kim Whitson, manager of the tree & shrub/water garden department at Evergreen of Johnson City; and Betty Freeman, landscape designer with Englewood Lawn and Landscapes, LLC.

The first lecture, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, by Tim Simounet, a 25-year veteran in the landscape industry, will discuss common mistakes made by landscapers and homeowners. The second lecture, Limitless Gardens, by Kim Whitson, a 20-year veteran in the horticulture industry, and by Betty Freeman, a member of the Perennial Plant Association, will talk about colors and textures of flowers that can be used year round.

The workshop also includes lunch and a demonstration by Down to Earth, a creative landscaping company in Gray, on grass growing. Attendees are also eligible for over $500 in coupons and door prizes, including the grand prize donated by Boone’s Creek Outdoor Power Equipment.

“This workshop is a service to the community,” said Clarinda Jeanes, the college’s first lady and the head of ALM. “Everyone is starting to work on his or her yards the first of April and this will get them off to a good start.”

ALM is a new organization that raises scholarship dollars for the college, serves the campus community and enriches women’s ministry in the local community. All proceeds from the Green Thumb workshop will go toward student scholarships at Milligan College.

The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. at the Taylor/Phillips House on the campus of Milligan College. The cost of the workshop is $20 a person or $35 a couple. Registration forms are available at the Milligan Bookstore. To learn more, call Vida Stansberry at 423-975-8054.
