Information open house for those considering a teaching career

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (October 22, 2002) – Individuals interested in a career change may want to attend an information open house about Milligan’s Master of Education program on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Derthick Hall second floor lecture room. The program enables students with degrees not necessarily in education to complete teacher licensure requirements and earn a master’s degree.

The open house will allow visitors to speak with faculty, current students and recent graduates of Milligan’s M.Ed. program.

“Today’s schools are challenged as never before,” said Dr. Billye Joyce Fine, director of teacher education, “and our children need teachers who are committed to excellence in the classroom and to strong moral values.”

The M.Ed. at Milligan may be completed in as little as 15 months or can be structured to meet student needs. The program provides extensive experience working directly with master teachers in local schools through a required internship. Some internships even provide a modest stipend, explained Fine.

Fully approved by the Tennessee Department of Education, Milligan’s M.Ed. program is also accredited by NCATE, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. NCATE accreditation means that a graduate’s degree and teaching credentials are instantly recognized throughout Tennessee and in other states.

Teacher certification is available in early childhood, middle grades, secondary and K-12. Secondary education areas include biology, chemistry, English, French, history, mathematics, psychology, sociology and Spanish. Middle grades areas include social science, language arts, mathematics, science, humanities and Bible. K-12 areas include music, theatre and physical education.

More than 400 Milligan alumni are working in local school systems including several local administrators and coaches, said Fine. The college’s education program is well-recognized and well-respected throughout the region.
