Students honored at Awards Convo


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (May 3, 2002) — Thursday’s Awards Convocation was a special day for many Milligan students who were honored for their academic accomplishments this past year. More than 50 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration at yesterday’s ceremony. The awards are listed below, with students’ names, hometowns, and award received.

Theatre Recognition Awards acknowledge graduating seniors who have made a significant contribution to the theatre program while a student at Milligan. The recipients were Suzy Bomgardner, a senior from Johnson City, Tenn.; Hannah Carson, a senior from Willow, N.C.; Chesa Gonzales, a senior from Grundy, Va.; Molly Tatum, a senior from Elk Park, N.C.; Jenny Trivett, a senior from Gray, Tenn.; and Amber Ybarra, a senior from Urbandale, Iowa.

The Fine Arts Award is presented to a graduating senior whose major is fine arts. Along with excellence in the classroom, this award acknowledges the student who has best exemplified what it means to be an artist. This year’s recipient was Hannah Carson, a senior from Willow, N.C.

The Performing and Visual Arts Scholarship is awarded each year to a rising junior or senior fine arts major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who has also found significant ways to connect to the many facets of Milligan’s fine arts program. This year’s recipient was Jamie Osborne, a junior from Lebanon, Va..

The Music Educators National Conference Student Chapter Award was presented to senior Lindsey Holloway of Jackson, Tenn.

The Chamber Orchestra Award was presented to Emily Fuller, a senior from Silver Spring, Md.

The Concert Choir Award is presented to the person deemed to have made the greatest contribution to the musical and spiritual life of the Concert Choir. The recipient is selected by vote of the Concert Choir members. This year’s recipient was Carrie Hall Taylor, a junior from Bluefield, Va. Taylor is president of Concert Choir and a three-year veteran of the choir.

The Outstanding Music Student Award is presented to the person deemed to have most consistently exhibited excellence in music courses, ensembles, and personal performance. The recipient is selected by vote of the full-time music faculty. This year’s recipient was Lauren Webb, a junior music and humanities double major from Bristol, Tenn. Webb is a member of the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers.

The Outstanding Communication Student Award was presented to Christan McKay, a senior from Pendleton, Ind.

The WJHL Lancaster Scholarship Award was presented to Evan Patrick, a junior from Columbia, S.C.

The Stampede Writing Award was awarded to senior Misty Fry from Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

The Stampede Leadership Award was presented to Christan McKay, a senior from Pendleton, Ind.

The Outstanding Broadcast Student Award was presented to senior Tim Morton from West Lebanon, N.H.

The Film Pioneer Award was presented to Buddy Arnold, a senior from Johnson City, Tenn.

The WUMC 90.5 Christian Radio Leadership Award was presented to Holly Apted, a sophomore from Louisville, Ky.

The Outstanding Photojournalism Award was presented to junior Jason Harville from Springboro, Ohio.

The Outstanding Public Relations Award was presented to senior Sarah Coleman of Kingsport, Tenn.

The Humanities Award was presented to sophomore Paige Wassel of Robinson, Ill.

The Humane Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Jennifer Openshaw, a junior from Oceanside, Calif.

The German Award was presented to Regina Holtman, a senior from Fayetteville, Ga., and Sheri Wilcox, a senior from Frankfort, Ind. The award was presented on the basis of their outstanding achievement, exemplary commitment and measurable progress in the acquisition of German language skills. Holtman achieved the highest academic scores in the cadre of Milligan German students. Wilcox distinguished herself among her colleagues with energy, commitment to learning, and use of the language outside of the German classroom.

The French Award was presented to sophomore Paige Wassel of Robinson, Ill.

The Spanish Award was presented to junior Jaimie Newsome of Littleton, N.C.

The Greek Award was presented to Joseph Dalton, a junior from Bloomington, Ill.

The Biblical Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Wendy Alexander, a junior from Toronto, Ohio.

The Social Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Jenny Burgess, a junior from Crown Point, Ind.

The Wall Street Journal Award was presented to Bill Hauck, a senior from Spencerport, N.Y.

The Institute of Managerial Accountants Outstanding Accounting Student Award was presented to Nichole Berwanger, a senior from Flower, Texas.

The Professional Learning (Business) Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Emily Fuller, a senior from Silver Spring, Md.

The Outstanding Mathematics Major Award was presented to Ashley Greer, a senior from Hayward, Calif.

The Outstanding Biology Student Award was presented to Portia Morrison, a senior from Roan Mountain, Tenn. The Lone L. Sisk Award was presented to senior Latisha Bertoli from Louisville, Ky.

The Scientific Learning Outstanding Student Scholarshiprecipient was Laura Jones, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind.

The Outstanding Senior Nursing Student Award was awarded to Tanyelle Treece, a senior from Johnson City, Tenn.

The Professional Learning (Nursing) Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Julie Bostrom, a senior from Elizabethton, Tenn.

The Human Performance and Exercise Science Award was presented to senior Pedro Figueira of New York, N.Y.

The Human Performance and Exercise Science Physical Education Award was presented to Andrew Stoots, a senior from Bristol, Tenn.

The Undergraduate Student Teaching Award was presented to senior Natalie Black of Dayton, Ohio. The Master of Education Intern Award was presented to Robert “Tucker” Davis of Kingsport, Tenn. The Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to M.Ed. graduate Angie Barnett of Bristol, Tenn. The Paul Clark Teacher Education Award was presented to Amy Charlton of Milligan College, Tenn. The Professional Learning (Education) Outstanding Student Scholarship went to Kari Lefever, a junior from Lancaster, Pa.

Certificates of Appreciation for Outstanding Student Service were presented to seniors Regina Holtman, Fayetteville, Ga.; Kent Pettit, Columbus, Ind.; Jennifer Taber, Morganton, N.C.; and Stephanie Taber, Morganton, N.C.

The Student Leadership Award was presented to Brian Davis, a senior from Louisville, Ky. The award is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates servant leadership, virtuous character, active leadership responsibility and potential, and serves as a role model to other students.

The Faculty/Staff Student Appreciation Award was presented to Dr. Bert Allen, professor of psychology and chair of the Area of Social Learning.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award was presented to Courtney Gardner, a senior from Greenwood, Ind.
