Milligan to start Psi Chi chapter

by Cory Hynek, PR Intern

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 18, 2002) – Milligan College has been approved to start a chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, which will induct its first 11 members tomorrow evening, March 19.

Milligan joins more than 975 colleges and universities who have chapters of Psi Chi, a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

”Psychology students who join will become part of a nationally recognized honor society. This will enhance their professional credentials and improve their chances of being accepting to graduate school,” said Dr. Joy Drinnon, psychology professor and the group’s advisor.

Drinnon, a former student president of Psi Chi at East Tennessee State University, submitted an application showing that Milligan and its students met the requirements to start a chapter. For students to be inducted into Psi Chi they must rank in the upper 35 percent of their class, maintain at least a B average in all psychology courses, and exhibit high standards of personal behavior.

“To receive approval to start a chapter we had to show that our college had high standards and a strong psychology curriculum,” said Drinnon. “Each applicant has met the qualifications for the chapter according to their class rank, grade point average in psychology courses, and each of their high standards of conduct.”

Milligan was unanimously approved to start the chapter by the voting body of Psi Chi.

Milligan’s Psi Chi chapter will induct 11 students into its first class at the March 19 ceremony, held at 7:00 p.m. at the Fireside Lounge in the McMahan Student Center. Dr. Otto Zinser, the faculty advisor of the ETSU chapter, will serve as the induction officer.

The students who have been selected are Jennifer Burgess, Kathy Dowda, Jackie Hartick, Michael Heim, Erin Hogshead, Meggan Juhl, John Lawson, Jessica Moore, Mary Moore, Joshua Porter, Jonathan Powell, Stephanie Troyer and Kristen Speak.

Psi Chi was founded in 1929 and its purpose is to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology.
