Milligan to host prospective counseling students on June 8

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (June 2, 2015) — Students interested in studying counseling can be a Milligan College “Student for a Night” and experience the college’s graduate counseling program on Monday, June 8, from 5-8 p.m. Students will meet in Hardin Hall, room 103.

Prospective students will have the opportunity to connect with current students, tour the counseling center and sit in on a counseling class taught by Dr. John-Paul Abner, professor of occupational therapy, psychology and counseling. He has Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Florida. In addition, he is a licensed clinical psychologist who was named executive director of the board of Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) International. Abner also is a certified PCIT Master Trainer for PCIT International and is involved in dissemination efforts nationwide.

Following the class, students will be led through the details of the admission process.

“This event is the perfect opportunity for students to experience first-hand what it’s like to be a counseling student at Milligan,” said Courtney Kieslich, director of graduate and professional studies. “Students will be able to interact with and experience the quality of a Milligan master teacher, Dr. Abner, while also meeting other current students in the program.”

The Master of Science in Counseling (MSC) program offers concentrations in school counseling and clinical mental health counseling. In addition, through a cooperative agreement with Emmanuel Christian Seminary, Milligan offers a certificate of graduate study in counseling ministry which introduces students to basic knowledge about both secular and Christian perspectives on counseling and how these may be applied in a church-based setting.
