Maureen Knechtel
Associate Professor of Physician Assistant Studies
Dr. Maureen Knechtel is an Associate Professor of Physician Assistant Studies, in addition to an Academic Coordinator and Remediation Specialist for Milligan University’s Physician Assistant Program. Her research specialties include curriculum design and delivery, medical simulation, student remediation, cardiac dysrhythmias, and electrocardiogram interpretation.
In addition to her roles at Milligan, Dr. Knechtel continues to work clinically as a cardiology physician assistant at the Ballad Health Cardiovascular Associates Heart Institute. She was named the 2021 Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants Educator of the Year for the State of Tennessee. She currently serves as the electrophysiology physician assistant representative for the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Knechtel authored the textbook, EKG Interpretation for the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant, Editions 1 through 4. She is also the designer and editor of the seven-book series, The Physician Assistant Student’s Guide to the Clinical Year. Dr. Knechtel also published “Risk Factor Modification as a Treatment Pillar in Managing Atrial Fibrillation” in The Journal of the American Academy of PAs, the premier journal for PAs.
At Milligan, mentoring students is the highlight of Dr. Knechtel’s work. She also views medical education as not just a profession but an opportunity to serve and make a difference in people’s lives. This perspectives ties into Dr. Knechtel’s faith, which remains a source of resilience and provides a sense of mission as she helps her students realize their full potential.
