John Paul Abner
Professor of Occupational Therapy, Psychology, and Counseling; Director of Academic Advising
Dr. John Paul Abner is a Professor of Occupational Therapy, Psychology, and Counseling, where he specializes in Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). At the graduate level, Dr. Abner teaches occupational therapists how to critically evaluate and perform research. On the undergraduate level, Dr. Abner teaches child development, developmental psychology, issues in children’s mental health, and an introduction to college and service course.
Dr. Abner’s notable achievements include being one of only 21 people in the world certified as a Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) International global trainer. PCIT is an evidenced-based treatment that treats children’s disruptive behaviors. Dr. Abner trains therapists in PCIT all over the world, and in Tennessee, he has worked with the Tennessee Centers of Excellence for Children in State Custody, to help train over 300 therapists in PCIT.
Dr. Abner has published numerous studies on PCIT and has written several chapters on PCIT in academic books. He was an author on the first published, randomized-control study showing that PCIT is effective in treating children on the autism spectrum. He also helped establish training guidelines for PCIT, helped create the PCIT International certification process, and was the co-author of the certification exam.
At Milligan, Dr. Abner finds great fulfillment in mentoring students. He appreciates the environment fostered at Milligan that grants him the time to encourage and engage in meaningful mentorships with his students. He believes that Milligan attracts a special kind of student and appreciates their commitment to Milligan’s mission.
Dr. Abner’s personal faith is rooted in the sacrificial love that is shown through Christian community. He quotes John 13:34-35, “A new command I give you, love one another. All men will know that you are mine if you love one another,” as a core tenet of his faith. Dr. Abner believes that the Christian command to love our neighbors and our enemies creates better lives and stronger culture.
