What is the Writing Center?

The Writing Center is a free resource where students can receive one-on-one support with their writing at any stage of the process. Our trained writing coaches work with writers from all disciplines and skill levels to help develop stronger writing skills and confidence. We also occasionally offer group workshops on special writing topics.

Who can use the Writing Center?

All currently enrolled students can use our services, regardless of their major, year in school, or writing experience. We work with undergraduate and graduate students on any type of writing assignment.

How much does it cost?

All Writing Center services are completely free for students.

Appointments and Scheduling

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule appointments online through our booking system or in person. Though it’s not required, we recommend booking in advance, especially during busy periods like midterms and finals.

How far in advance should I schedule?

We recommend scheduling 3-7 days in advance, though same-day appointments are sometimes available. During peak times (midterms, finals, major paper deadlines), appointments may book up to two weeks ahead.

Can I schedule multiple appointments?

Yes! We encourage students to schedule follow-up appointments, especially for longer projects. You can typically schedule up to two appointments per week.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Please give us at least 24 hours notice when possible. You can cancel or reschedule through our online system or in person. Late cancellations may limit your ability to schedule future appointments.

Do you offer walk-in appointments?

We offer limited walk-in hours during less busy periods. Check our current schedule online or stop by to see if walk-in slots are available.

What to Expect

How long are appointments?

Appointments are 20 or 40 minutes, depending on your needs. Here’s a detailed answer:

Mini consultation (20-min):

  • Up to 2 double-spaced pages or one specific question

Regular consultation (40-min):

  • Up to 6 double-spaced pages or ~1500 words
  • A section of up to 5 double-spaced pages of a longer essay

Long essay or multilingual writer consultation (60-min slot; 40-min appt):

  • For undergraduate consultants: up to 12 double-spaced pages

For GA consultants: up to 20 pages double-spaced pages

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring your draft (even if incomplete), the assignment prompt, any relevant course materials, and specific questions or concerns about your writing. A laptop or notebook for taking notes is also helpful.

What if I don't have a draft yet?

That’s perfectly fine! We can help with brainstorming, understanding assignments, creating outlines, and developing thesis statements. Bring whatever you have, including notes or ideas.

Will the writing coach fix my paper for me?

No, we don’t edit or proofread papers for students. Instead, we work collaboratively to help you develop your ideas, improve your writing process, and learn to identify and address writing and editing issues independently.

Can my writing coach improve my grade?

We hope so! Whatever stage of writing you’re at, your writing coach can work with you to improve it. However, we can’t guarantee certain grades. We don’t just make better writing: we make better writers.

Types of Support

What kinds of writing do you help with?

We assist with all types of academic writing, including essays, research papers, lab reports, creative writing, personal statements, cover letters, resumes, presentations, and thesis/dissertation work.

Do you help with grammar and mechanics?

Yes, but we prefer to focus on higher-order concerns (organization, argument, evidence) before addressing grammar and mechanics. We’ll teach you strategies for self-editing rather than simply correcting errors.

Can you help with citation and formatting?

Absolutely! We can help you understand and apply various citation styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) and formatting requirements.

Policies and Guidelines

How many times can I visit?

The current limit is two visits per week, to ensure that all students have access to the writing center.

Can I work with the same writing coach?

While we can’t guarantee the same writing coach for every appointment, if you schedule in advance and your favorite writing coach isn’t sick, you are likely to get them!

Do you work with group projects?

Yes, we can work with small groups (2-4 students) on collaborative writing projects. Please schedule these with a GA.

Is everything confidential?

When you register for an appointment, we will ask your permission to answer your prof if they ask “Did my student visit the writing center?” However, we will share no details about your visit or draft with anyone outside the writing center.

Special Circumstances

What if I have a disability that affects my writing?

We work with students with all types of disabilities and can coordinate with Disability Services to ensure you receive appropriate support. Let us know about any accommodations you need when scheduling.

I'm really nervous about my writing. Will you judge me?

Not at all! Our writing coaches are trained to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Remember, seeking help with writing shows initiative and commitment to improvement.

What if English isn't my first language?

We welcome multilingual writers and understand the unique challenges of writing in a second language. Our writing coaches are experienced in working with students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
