Milligan is committed to keeping college affordable for our students. We’ll work with you individually every step of the way to help investigate all the options available for financing your education. We offer a full complement of need-based and merit-based scholarships, grants, and low-interest loans from federal, state, and institutional sources. We also have a variety of payment options that make budgeting easier for you and your family.

Student Account

Before the First Day of Class

All financial aid processes should be completed and the remaining balance paid by 5 pm the Wednesday before the first day of class. Registration will be cancelled for students who have not completed ALL financial aid processes AND paid the balance due by the registration cancellation date. See the Milligan Catalog for more details.

The following should be completed before the first day of class:

  • Pay entire balance due or enroll in the Tuition Payment Plan on your Self-Service account
  • Review and accept Financial Aid Offer
  • Complete master promissory note
  • Complete online entrance counseling for first time borrowers
  • Return all documents requested for verification, if applicable
  • Submit pre-approval for alternative loans, if applicable
  • Submit final high school transcript
  • Complete Parent Plus loan application, if applicable
  • Communicate to SFS all payments expected from VA or 529 savings plans
  • Submit immunization form

This is not an exhaustive list of tasks which might need to be completed. See your SFS counselor about your specific situation.

Any student with an unresolved balance at the end of the day on the registration cancellation date will have their registration cancelled and will no longer be allowed to attend classes. In order to re-enroll, students will have to satisfactorily resolve all financial issues and will be assessed a $250 re-enrollment fee.

Charges

Charges shown on the student statement include tuition, fees, room and board. Once you enroll, you are liable for all charges.

Pending Financial Aid

Aid that is listed on the student statement is aid that has been awarded to you but is still in ANTICIPATED/PENDING status. Your financial aid will be posted to your student account upon verification of enrollment status after drop/add period ends and all necessary aid paperwork is completed. Pending aid does not include work study, outside scholarships, VA benefits, or payments from Section 529 savings plans.

Payment Options

Milligan offers an interest-free payment plan that is an easy, affordable way to pay for the year’s charges (not covered by other aid). You can also pay with cash, checks, credit/debit cards, or make payments online.

Work-study

If you have accepted work-study on your Financial Aid Offer, and applied for and been hired for a job, you will receive a work-study contract during the summer. Wages earned through work-study positions are paid twice monthly. If you have any questions about your work-study award, contact Student Financial Services at 800.447.4880.

Refunds

REFUND IN THE EVENT OF WITHDRAWAL FROM THE UNIVERSITY

The University operates on an annual budget which necessitates advance planning and financial commitments to teaching staff and others whose services are essential to its operations. For this reason, no refunds are granted to those persons who are dismissed from the University for disciplinary reasons. The official date of withdrawal used to compute refunds is the date on which the student begins the official withdrawal process in the Student Development Office.

TUITION, ON-CAMPUS HOUSING, ON-CAMPUS MEAL PLAN (TRADITIONAL UNDERGRAD, MAH, MSC, MSPAS, MSOT, MED, MDiv, MTS, EdD, EdS):

Tuition, room and board refunds are calculated on the following schedule:  
Prior to first calendar day of the semester 100%
During first seven calendar days of the semester 75%
During the eighth through the fourteenth calendar days of the semester 50%
No refunds after the 14th calendar day of the semester 0%

An exception is made for illness, in which case the 50% refund period is extended to the ninth week. Illness must be certified by a physician’s written statement.

FEES REFUND SCHEDULE

Fees are only refundable during the first seven calendar days of the semester.

INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Institutional scholarships are those scholarships granted by Milligan University.

In the event of withdrawal from the University, institutional scholarships will be applied using the following schedule:  
Prior to first calendar day of the semester 0%
During first seven calendar days of the semester 10%
During the eighth through the fourteenth calendar days of the semester 25%
During the fifteenth through the thirtieth calendar days of the semester 50%
After the thirtieth calendar day of the semester 100%

REFUND IN THE EVENT OF WITHDRAWAL FROM CLASS

The schedule of refunds for withdrawal from a class is different from above. Since the University charges the same tuition for traditional undergraduates enrolled in 12-18 hours, there is no refund for withdrawing from a class if the total hours, before and after withdrawal, is within the 12-18 range. If the new total hours are fewer than the original total, the following schedule will apply:

During the eighth through the fourteenth calendar days of the semester 75%

RETURN OF TITLE IV FUNDS (FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID)

In addition to the overall institutional refund policy requirements, the University is required to follow the regulations mandated by the Department of Education pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act for any student who receives Title IV Federal Aid. The Return of Title IV Fund calculations may result from the student withdrawing, dropping out, being expelled from the institution, or failing to complete the program on or after the student’s first day of class for the period of enrollment for which the student was charged. REFUND POLICY FOR COURSE FEES

Course fees will be refunded if the student drops the class within the first seven calendar days of the semester. After this time, fees will not be refunded.

FAQs

What are some important deadlines to be aware of?
  • December 1:
    • The FAFSA form will be available online in December for the 2024-25 academic year. Going forward, the FAFSA will open in October for the following academic year.
    • For maximum scholarship consideration, new students should be admitted to Milligan and file the FAFSA by December 1 for the following year’s admission. You can still apply after this date but may not receive maximum aid.
  • The Wednesday before the first day of class, all financial aid processes should be complete. You must pay your bill or enroll in the tuition payment plan.
When will I hear from the financial aid office?

The Student Financial Services Office begins to process financial aid awards in early December for new incoming students and February for returning students. Please review, accept, and submit your financial aid offer as quickly as possible.

My family's financial circumstances have changed, and I need more money. What should I do?

Talk to a financial aid counselor about Professional Judgment. Milligan University uses every resource and opportunity to assist students financially. Though the financial aid offer cannot be “negotiated,” special situations (such as death of a parent, loss of a job, severe illness, natural disaster, etc.) can be taken into consideration.

Do I have to reapply for financial aid every year?

Any student wishing to receive federal, state, and/or need-based Milligan aid must file the FAFSA each year. No additional financial aid application for Milligan is required.

How many semesters can I receive financial aid?

You may receive federal financial aid for up to 150% of the normal time frame it takes to complete a degree program. Milligan scholarships are renewable for 4 years; students must write a letter of appeal to be considered for institutional aid beyond their 4th year.

Am I eligible to file as an independent student without my parents’ information?

According to the federal government, a student is generally considered independent if he/she is at least one of the following:

  • 24 years old
  • A veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • An orphan or ward of the court
  • A student with legal dependents other than a spouse
  • A married student
  • A graduate student

If a student does not meet at least one of these criteria, he or she must be considered a dependent student, even if the student is not living with his or her parents.

How do outside scholarships affect my aid?

Outside scholarships will be counted as a resource as required by federal law. There are exceptions, but outside scholarships do not usually affect the amount of institutional aid you receive.

What is verification?

The federal government requires some students to verify the information reported on their FAFSA. Colleges are responsible for performing this verification and must do so before federal funds can be disbursed.

What is a Direct subsidized vs. unsubsidized loan?

Federal Direct Loans are either subsidized or unsubsidized. Your total award may include subsidized and/or unsubsidized loans for the same enrollment period.

A subsidized loan is awarded on the basis of financial need. You will not be charged any interest before you begin repayment or during authorized periods of deferment. The federal government “subsidizes” the interest during these periods.

An unsubsidized loan is not awarded on the basis of need. You will be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. If you allow the interest to accumulate, it will be capitalized; that is, the interest will be added to the principal amount of your loan and additional interest will be based upon the higher amount.

Federal Loan annual limits are based on enrollment status.

After I enroll, when is my payment due for the semester?

Bills are due the Wednesday before classes begin. If you miss this deadline, a $250 re-enrollment fee applies.

All financial issues will have to be addressed satisfactorily before a student will be able to re-register for classes. It will be the student’s responsibility to ensure their financial aid and student account balance have been addressed by the Wednesday before the first day of class. Students will not be able to eat in the cafeteria or grill using their meal plans after course schedules are canceled. Meals can be purchased with cash from Pioneer College Caterers during this time.

The Milligan University Student Financial Services Office and staff have adopted the NASFAA Code of Ethics and NASFAA Code of Conduct to insure good business practices in all day to day activities of the Student Financial Services Office.
