Dr. Hunter Mullins has been an adjunct music faculty member at Milligan University since 2017, where he teaches the brass studio, brass methods, world music, and supervises student teachers. He is an active performer, studio teacher, and music educator.
Dr. Mullins became the band director at John Sevier Middle School in Kingsport, Tennessee, in 2009, where he directed various ensembles including beginning band, concert band, jazz band, and percussion ensemble. Under his direction, the ensembles earned multiple Superior ratings at concert festivals and were invited to perform the National Anthem at baseball parks such as the Chattanooga Lookouts, Asheville Tourists, and Tennessee Smokies, as well as at Dolly’s Stampede in Pigeon Forge.
In 2021, Dr. Mullins became the instructor of elementary and instrumental music at University School, a K-12 lab school at East Tennessee State University. His current teaching responsibilities include elementary music for grades K-4 and instrumental music for grades 5-12, with ensembles in beginning, intermediate, and high school band. Dr. Mullins also serves as an adjunct instructor for the tuba and euphonium studio at ETSU.
Dr. Mullins is an experienced clinician and festival adjudicator. He has served as the clinician for the Smyth County, VA, middle school honor band and as a stage judge for the Virginia District VII concert festival. He is currently on the executive board for the East Tennessee State Band and Orchestra Association as the Upper Area Representative.
His private studio has produced many all-state players and college scholarship recipients on trombone, euphonium, and tuba. Dr. Mullins has been the 2nd trombonist for the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra since 2004 and regularly performs with other regional ensembles including the Symphony of the Mountains, Tri-Cities Jazz Orchestra, and various stage bands. He was a guest artist at the Tennessee Music Education Association state conference in 2016 and has been the coordinator for Kingsport’s TubaChristmas since 2013.
Dr. Mullins has received several awards, including the “Outstanding Teacher Award” from the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts in 2012 and 2014, and the Rosemary Smith “Touching Lives” Remembrance Award in 2019. These awards were student-nominated and selected.
Dr. Mullins is passionate about both performance and teaching, and he enjoys working with Milligan students. His faith is deeply rooted in the theological traditions of John Wesley, and he finds great joy in contributing to the Milligan community.
